Mill Creek MetroParks is advising park visitors to avoid recreational activities on Lake Newport until further notice due to potentially harmful algae in the lake.

A MetroParks official said the issue was brought to staff members’ attention Tuesday. The park district has been in contact with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency about the issue.

Schiavoni to speak

CANFIELD

State Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd, and candidate for Ohio governor, will lay out the details of his comprehensive plan to support Ohio workers and small businesses at 11:30 a.m. today at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 N, Palmyra Road. He also will announce his new, solutions-focused website.

Schiavoni will be joined by leaders in labor, business and career technical education. The announcement will take place at the front entrance of the school.

Pharmacy robbed

CALCUTTA

Three female employees of Buckeye Pharmacy on state Route 170 in St. Clair Township were tied up by two men, one of whom carried a handgun, who pretended to want a prescription filled but instead robbed the store of opioids, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

The pharmacist was forced at gunpoint to open the cabinet that contained the opioids, and the robbers then zip-tied the employees and put them in the rest-room, police said. No one was physically injured.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted township police in determining what was stolen. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call township police at 330-386-3585, ext. 125.

Poland panel to meet

POLAND

The Poland Village Planning Commission will host a special meeting at 5 p.m. today about updating sign ordinances. The meeting will take place at Poland Village Town Hall, 308 S. Main St.

Chalk the Walk event

The Miracles & Promises Radiothon, benefiting Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, will finish Friday with a Chalk the Walk event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring hospital staff and patient families sharing their hospital experiences through chalk artwork on the Beeghly campus Building D entrance. Local artist and YSU art professor Dragana Crnjak will create a chalk mural at 11 a.m.

The Parent Advisory Council, made up of families who have received care at Akron Children’s Hospital, coordinated the event that also includes summer treats and children’s activities. The Radiothon is happening today and tomorrow from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is live on Mix 98.9 and 570 WKBN.

Lectures at Sutliff

“Victorian Collections and Coffee,” the annual fall lecture series of the Sutliff Museum, will kick off Tuesday with a presentation on the impact of the Industrial Revolution on home interiors. The speaker is Teresa Etzler. The presentation will give insight into the influences the Industrial Revolution had on Victorian home interiors and how that influence extended to today.

This is the first of three free programs in the series and will be presented in the Thomas Meeting Room on the second floor of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW. Doors open at 9 a.m., and coffee and light refreshments will be available at that time. The lectures will begin at 9:30 a.m.
