The list-making folks at Wallethub have come out with a ranking of the nation’s best coffee cities, comparing criteria such as number of coffee shops per capita and average price. To no one’s surprise, Seattle, Portland and San Francisco comprised the top three, in that order (for complete list go to wallethub.com). Here are five facts drawn from the list:
v Lowest price: Miami has the lowest average price for a pack of coffee, $3.43, which is 2.3 times lower than in Honolulu, the city with the highest at $7.87.
v Household spending: Fremont, Calif., has the highest average annual spending on coffee per household, $185.00, which is three times higher than in Detroit, the city with the lowest at $61.29.
v Home brew: Gilbert, Ariz., has the highest share of households that own a single-cup/pod-brewing coffee maker, 21.1 percent, which is 2.9 times higher than in Hialeah, Fla., the city with the lowest at 7.3 percent.
v Most shops: New York has the most coffee shops, coffee houses and cafes (per capita), 1.0739, which is 45.5 times more than in Laredo, Texas, the city with the fewest at 0.0236.
v Most manufacturers: Portland, Ore., has the most coffee and tea manufacturers (per capita), 0.0180, which is 36 times more than in Riverside and San Bernardino, Calif., the cities with the fewest at 0.0005.
“Empire” (8 p.m., Fox): In the season four premiere, Lucious makes his first public appearance since the explosion in Las Vegas, but still has no memory of his family, Empire or his life before the accident.
“Survivor” (8 p.m., CBS): In the 35th season premiere, the castaways battle to prove which group has what it takes to win. Also, one tribe will earn an advantage when the game is immediately “ignited” by the season’s first challenge.
“Modern Family” (9 p.m., ABC): As season 9 premieres, Jay (played by Ed O’Neill) forces the family to take a vacation on a houseboat on a lake in an effort to create memories that will last long after he’s gone.
