The Mahoning County OVI Task Force netted one OVI arrest Saturday at a sobriety checkpoint on Mahoning Avenue. A total of 397 vehicles passed through the checkpoint between 10 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday. Only six stops resulted in further action. In addition to the OVI arrest, officers cited three motorists for driving under suspension and two for not wearing a seatbelt.
Woman identified

The woman who fell to her death at Youngstown State University’s Stambaugh Stadium on Friday was identified by the Mahoning County Coroner’s office Monday. The Vindicator’s broadcast media partner 21-WFMJ TV reported the 49-year-old woman was identified using a photo. A statement was issued Friday by the university saying the woman was not a student or employee at YSU. The Vindicator does not identify victims in the case of a possible suicide.

The Mahoning County Coroner’s office has released the name of a woman who died Sunday after a house fire in the 300 block of Crandall Avenue. 21-WFMJ TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, reported Monday that 49-year-old Karen Phillips’ cause of death is undetermined. The North Side fire hospitalized three people. Victims escaped by jumping from the home’s roof.
Planetarium show

Children from Paul C. Bunn Elementary School will join Elmo, Big Bird and Hu Hu Zhu – a Muppet from the Chinese co-production of Sesame Street – as they explore the night sky today in “One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure.” Sesame Workshop created the planetarium show with major funding by the PNC Foundation and other partners. The exhibit travels to area schools in an inflatable dome that provides children with an age-appropriate introduction to astronomy while forging cross-cultural connections.
At the “Growing Up Great Together Under One Big Sky” mobile planetarium, students receive a daytime/nighttime activity poster, which is trilingual (English, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish) and has reusable, glow-in-the dark stars to display at home.

“Make the Healthy Choice ... Get Active!” is the theme of the 2017 National Women’s Health and Fitness Day Wednesday at Youngstown State University.
The event is part of the national event and includes a variety of free events open to the public, including an all-day Drunk Driving/Distracted Driving simulator at Kilcawley Center’s Arcade; a 7 a.m. walk at the WATTS Center; a 10 a.m. Hydration Station and Pure Barre drop-in session at the WATTS Center; an 11 a.m. Pure Barre drop-in session at the WATTS Center; a noon presentation by a nutritionist and diabetes educator in the trustees room in Tod Hall; a blood-pressure screening in the gallery of Kilcawley Center from 1 to 3 p.m.; Yoga at Wick Park in the Wick Park Pavilion from 5 to 6 p.m.; and a 6:30 p.m. self-defense class in the Gallery in Kilcawley Center.

YSU seeks comments

Youngstown State University is seeking comments from the public about the university in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accrediting agency for the Higher Learning Commission. The team will review the institution’s ongoing ability to meet HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation.

Road to close
VERNON
Orangeville Kinsman Road, at the intersection of Jewell Greenville Road, will be closed from Oct. 2-20 due to culvert replacement. The recommended detour route is west on state Route 88, north on State Route 7, and east on Kinsman-Nickerson Road.
Man pleads not guilty
WARREN
Michael J. Orfin, 61, of 295 E. Market St., pleaded not guilty Monday in Warren Municipal Court to inducing panic, accused of burning wires next to his apartment building, called the Reeves Apartments, at 1:15 a.m. Saturday. The Warren Fire Department was called to the apartment building, which is home to about 55 people, by two residents.
When police arrived, they spotted Orfin burning the rubber from copper wires that were in a burn pile next to to the brick building. He was booked into the county jail and released. Orfin remained free on $100 bond.
