DANCES

Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St., is offering community dance lessons at 4 p.m. Wednesdays. Each lesson is one hour, and the cost is $5 per lesson, Bob McPhail, a professional instructor, teaches a variety of dances. Niles Friendly Squares offers weekly square dance lessons from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. Main St. This is a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. Sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. Sessions will run through December with a second session beginning Jan. 9, 2018. FESTIVALS

St. Maron's Parish, 1555 Meridian Road, Youngstown, will host its annual Lebanese food festival from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Trumbull County Historical Society will host Oktoberfest on the Square from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Youngstown Saxon Brass Band will entertain, and there will be grape stomping, strudel baking competitions, traditional tapping of the keg and authentic German food and beer. Presale tickets are available for $25 until Wednesday or until sold out. Remaining tickets will be sold for $30 at the event. Tickets include all-you-can-eat and two drink tickets. Warren Flea and Farmer's Market, 428 Main St., SW, one block south of Courthouse Square, is preparing for its annual Oktoberfest on Oct. 7. There will be free parking and free admission. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be food, family fun and prizes, plus face painting, pumpkin decorating and fidget spinner contests. FUNDRAISERS

Survivor Run fourth annual event will take place Saturday at Buckeye Horse Park, 9260 Akron-Canfield Road, in Canfield, The event is being hosted by Megan Hruska in honor of her mother, Sallie Sullivan. Sullivan was diagnosed with breast cancer October 2013, and her recent diagnosis revealed her cancer has spread to her bones and now to her liver. This event is to bring awareness to early detection and to share the love and passion she has for competitive trail riding. This year’s theme at Survivor Run is the “Derby.” Best Derby hat picture will be taken at 10:30 a.m., and riders will set out on the trail around noon. Eyes For Olivia presents the Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation History Walk through Salem’s Hope Cemetery on Oct. 8. Travel back in time to meet some of Salem’s past residents and hear their stories. The History Walk begins at 6 p.m. in the Chapel at Hope Cemetery, 1015 N. Lincoln Ave, Salem. Parking is available off Superior Avenue in Waterworth Memorial Park. A few items from the Salem Historical Society will be on display in the chapel along with light refreshments and a gravestone rubbing demonstration. Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue will host “Night at the Races” at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown. Mahoning Valley College Access Program will host a progressive dinner fundraiser Oct. 7.

St. Nicholas School is participating in a shoe collection fundraiser until Sunday. Rubber band gently used shoes in pairs. The goal is to collect 2500 pairs and boxes to donate are located at St. Nicholas and Holy Trinity Church doors.

Sight for all United will host “The Second Eye Ball of the Mahoning Valley” on Saturday at Powers Auditorium. This event will help raise funds to continue to sustain Sight for All and assist the citizens in our community who are in need of vision services. “American Idol” finalist Scott MacIntyre will be the special guest. Sponsorships available are: Visionary, $10,000 reserves 16 seats (two tables); Crystal Clear, $5,000 reserves eight seats; 20-20 donor, $2,500 reserves eight seats; and Sight Saver, $1,000 reserves eight seats. Struthers Parkside Church, 110 Poland Ave., will host a spaghetti dinner and basket auction from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 14. Dinner includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread and butter, dessert and drinks. Cost is $7 per person, and children 6 and under are free. Takeout is also available. Auction tickets are $10 per sheet.

PROGRAMS

Friends of the Poland Library will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 3. “All That’s New at the Library” will be the topic of presenter Deborah Liptak, library development director. A potluck luncheon will follow the speaker and business meeting. Members are asked to bring a salad or casserole. There will not be a coffee hour. Donations of books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, for the Poland Library book cart may be bought to all meetings. Meetings are open to the public and new members are welcome. Dues are $10 per year.

Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will offer “Gettin’ Crafty” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9. Attendees will use acrylic paints, embellishments and extra-long paint stir sticks to create a double-sided seasonal decoration. One side will feature a fall design and the other a winter design. Youngstown Public Library Main Branch, 305 Wick Ave., will host a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 about holocaust survivors. Holocaust Education Specialist Jess McClain will share the experiences of local Holocaust survivors Henry Kinast and Bill Vegh. A special guest, Kinast was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1930 and enjoyed a comfortable childhood with his parents and brother. By the time Henry was 12, he was separated from his family and worked as a slave-laborer in a nearby munitions factory complex/concentration camp, where, despite the deplorable conditions, he became an expert machinist. Henry’s mother was deported to Treblinka and killed in the gas chambers; he, his brother and father were sent to Buchenwald concentration camp. All three survived, and Henry ultimately ended up in Youngstown in 1955. The Henry Kinast Holocaust Survivor Exhibit, featuring eight panels of photographs and narratives from Kinast, will be on display at the event and for several days prior; call 330-744-8636 and ask for Reader’s Services for more information. Mahoning County Extension, 490 S. Broad St., Canfield, will host a class from 10:00 a.m. to noon Oct. 16 on the origin of growing and crafting gourds. Pam Baytos, Mahoning County master gardener volunteer, will teach participants about the history of gourds and how they are used today. Westminster College Alumni Association will host its first annual “Titan Tye Dye Run” at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the memorial field house, 319 S. Market St. Check-in and same day registration at 9:45 with the race to begin at 10:30. Registration is $5 per runner or walker. Proceeds will be donated to the Student Emergency Fund. Runners will be powdered with washable dye and should dress accordingly. I.Q. Quilt Club will host its 37th annual quilt show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the New Vernon Grange, 239 Sheakleyville Road, Clarks Mills, Pa. Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County needs volunteers guides for the Ghost Walk at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13, 14, 20 and 21 at First Presbyterian Church, 256 Mahoning Ave, NW, Warren. Guides lead tours each evening, and the tour takes one hour. Actors will portray the restless spirits of people who once lived in Trumbull County. Guides will meet at 2 p.m. Sept. 8 at the church to review this year’s stories, learn this year’s tour route and talk about the guide duties. Those who cannot attend the guide meeting should notify the staff when signing up.

GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women's League is hosting its second Quarter Auction on Oct. 21 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, 764 Fifth Street, Struthers. Four Mile Run Road, is offering a two-day training course Friday and Saturday, “Church Security Planning and Intruder Response training certification,” by Strategos International of Kansas City, Mo.
