No details on death investigation at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

Officials at Youngstown State University Friday refused to provide many details about a death investigation on campus.

A late afternoon statement by the university said the person who died was not a student or employee of the university.

An ambulance was called to the university about 12:10 p.m. for a report that someone fell from Stambaugh Stadium.

In the early afternoon, university spokesman Ron Cole said only that someone had died at the university, but he refused to confirm reports that the person had jumped from Stambaugh Stadium.

As Cole briefed the press, he was standing in the area of Gate D at the stadium, where several university police officers were and where an ambulance had just left.

A white sheet was on the ground after the ambulance left. University employees were seen hosing down the area that the sheet was covering.

Several police cars that could be seen leaving that area of the stadium had people in the back seat, like they were being taken for questioning.

Cole did say that counseling was available on campus for anyone who may be affected by the person’s death.

Calls to YSU Police Chief Shawn Varso were referred back to Cole.
