Jets’ Skrine, Giants’ Engram fined by NFL

NEW YORK

New York Jets cornerback Buster Skrine has been fined $24,309 by the NFL for a helmet hit last week at Oakland.

Skrine was called for unnecessary roughness for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Raiders running back DeAndre Washington in the Jets’ 42-20 loss.

The NFL also fined Giants rookie tight end Evan Engram $12,154 for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he received after celebrating his first career touchdown with a questionable gesture. While dancing in the end zone following an 18-yard reception to start the second quarter, Engram appeared to reach down at his crotch — Michael Jackson-style — with his left hand.

The penalty cost the Giants, who lost 24-10, 15 yards on the ensuing kickoff.

Warriors to decide on White House visit

OAKLAND, CALIF.

Coach Steve Kerr expects the Golden State Warriors to meet as a group in the coming days to decide whether to visit President Donald Trump’s White House as NBA champions.

General manager Bob Myers said the Warriors have had discussions with the White House and “I don’t know what we’re going to do.”

Stephen Curry has been outspoken about not attending, saying Friday, “I don’t want to go ... my beliefs stay the same.” He noted Golden State must consider the “magnitude of this decision.”

Kerr, who missed 11 games during the playoffs dealing with discomfort from 2015 back surgery, also said he is encouraged about his improving health. He said he’s not 100 percent but is on a good path.

Golden State held its media day Friday ahead of the opening practice of training camp Saturday.

Zidane to face Zidane

MADRID

Zinedine Zidane could face off against one of his sons when Real Madrid plays Alaves in the Spanish league on Saturday.

Enzo Zidane played for Madrid’s youth teams, including a stint under the orders of his father, for several years before signing a contract with Alaves this offseason.

Father and son will be reunited, albeit on opposite sides of the ball, when Madrid visits the Basque Country club.

When asked on Friday about the possibility of coaching against his son’s team, Zinedine Zidane said, “I hope he doesn’t score.”

“We are both very competitive,” he added. “I am not thinking about going against my son. The game is Real Madrid against Alaves.”

UEFA bans Spartak fans for shooting flare

NYON, Switzerland

UEFA has banned Spartak Moscow from selling tickets to fans for its next Champions League away game after a rocket-like flare was fired toward a referee.

UEFA says the Russian champions have also been fined 60,000 euros ($72,000).

The ticket ban will apply to Spartak’s trip to play Sevilla on Nov. 1.

Spartak’s home game against Liverpool on Tuesday in Moscow will not be affected.

The flare rocketed out of the section holding visiting Spartak fans early in its 1-1 draw with Slovenian champion Maribor last week. It landed in the center circle near German referee Denis Aytekin and burned out. The referee briefly stopped play.
