CCW class

The New Middletown Farmers and Sportsmen’s Club, 3341 E. Calla Road, will have a CCW class from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 7.

Cost is $90, which includes all classroom material, targets, coffee and muffins in the morning and a light lunch.

A safe, functioning pistol, 50 rounds of ammunition, and eye and ear protection are required.

CORTLAND

Local hunters have an opportunity to assist in reducing the raccoon population at Mosquito Lake State Park during open raccoon season this year.

Two participants will be drawn Oct. 19. Interested applicants must mail a postcard with their name, address and phone number to Mosquito Lake State Park, 1439 State Route 305, Cortland, OH 44410. All entries must be postmarked by Oct. 16. Entries will be drawn Oct. 19 at the park office.

Military shoot

Niles

The Western Reserve Fish & Game Association, 1058 W. Third St., will have a military shoot on its 100-yard outdoor range on the third Saturday of each month until late fall.

The cost is $5 per shooter, and participants must provide their own ammunition.

Fall turkey shoots

Lowellville

The Lowellville Rod and Gun Club, 6225 Quarry Road, will have fall turkey shoots through Nov. 21.

Sign-up begins at 6 p.m., and shoots start at 7. Shells will be provided at a cost of $2 per shell.

Archery season opens today

Columbus

Hunters will have their first opportunity to pursue white-tailed deer when archery season opens today, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Ohio’s 2017-18 deer seasons include:

Archery: Today-Feb. 4, 2018

Youth gun: Nov. 18-19

Gun: Nov. 27-Dec. 3 and Dec. 16-17

Muzzleloader: Jan. 6-9, 2018

Deer hunters will find the hunting regulations similar to last year, but bag limits were changed in certain counties.

Licenses and permits can be purchased online at wildohio.gov and at hundreds of participating agents throughout the state.
