Quarter auction presented to benefit local charities
The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its second Quarter Auction on Oct. 21 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bidding starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and the proceeds will benefit local charities. Chips, popcorn, water and soda will be available for purchase. Chaney class of 1956 to meet

Newcomers to host first meeting
Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will host its first meeting at Bruno’s on Sept. 27. The gathering begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Jeanne Vild and Lori Brennan will be hosting the event. The meeting will cover summer activities and preview the plans and schedules for 2017-2018 year. Needlework, Roundtowners and movie and book clubs will also be reviewed. Newcomers was formed 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the community. Area dancers travel for square dance

Go to the Poland library’s Baby Brilliant program every Thursday in October at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Win a tickets to Disney Live at Covelli Center
Go to any PLYMC library to color a picture and enter a drawing to win four tickets (a family pack) to the 5 p.m. on Oct. 29 performance of Disney Live’s “Mickey & Minnie’s Doorway to Magic.” The contest runs from Oct. 2-19. Each library in the system will have its own drawing during regular library hours.
Bond with babies and books
Join the library for Baby Brilliant every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. The program is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Poland Relay for Life benefit fundraiser
Join the Poland Relay for Life on Sept. 29 and 30 at 28 Island Drive in Poland for a benefit fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and the Poland Relay for Life. Raffle baskets, bake sale and trash to treasure items will be available on both days, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Raffle baskets include a tailgating grill, date night items and several gift cards. All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
Akron Children’s welcomes pediatric cardiologist
Meagan Peek, MD, has joined Akron Children’s Hospital’s Heart Center in Boardman as a pediatric cardiologist. Dr. Peek received her medical degree from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky., where she also completed her residency in pediatrics. She completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Dr. Peek is board certified in pediatrics and board eligible in pediatric cardiology. She has a special clinical interest in fetal echocardiography. The team in the Heart Center offers cardiovascular services, from before birth through adulthood, for patients with congenital heart disease and pediatric arrhythmia disorders. The center is accredited in pediatric and fetal echocardiography by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories and is a top ranked cardiovascular surgery program by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database. Dr. Peek lives in Poland with her husband.

Get a look into hoarding disorder
Molly Suehr and Rachel Cline, trained under the direction of Cory Chalmers, host of A&E’s “Hoarders” television show, will help us to understand hoarding disorder. The presentation will provide a definition, an idea of the prevalence of hoarders, the varying levels of hoarding and the differing hording types. What type of person hoards? You may be surprised. Go to the meeting at the Poland library on Oct. 23 at 10 a.m.
Prepare for kindergarten through play
Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for children who are ages 2-6 years-old. It will take place on Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library.
Learn the history of cinema with urban explorer
Join the “Historic Theaters of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley” and historian Sean T. Posey as he traces the evolution of modern cinema through the rich local history of the Mahoning Valley. Books will be available for sale. No reservations are needed. Join Posey at the library on Oct. 18 at 11 a.m.
Solve an enchanted murder mystery at the library
This mystery event at the Poland library on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. will be performed for teens, by teens. Murder in the Library: Once Upon a Murder - Once upon a time, there was a faraway land called the Enchanted Realm, whose people got along harmoniously for many centuries...until Queen Black gained control. It was not long before happy endings turned into nightmares. Queen Black has invited all of the territories to the Dark Castle to sign a peace treaty and she may have evil intentions. Nonetheless, you must solve the murder before the killer strikes again. Listen carefully to the suspects, study the crime scene and watch for any unusual circumstances. Only the sleuth with the most correct answers will win the prize. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for teens only. Author and Youtube sensation to appear at the library
Help the Poland library celebrate Teen Read Week with YouTube star, Paige McKenzie. McKenzie is the face of “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl” Network, now boasting a viewership of 230 million and author of the best-selling young adult trilogy of the same name. Praised by R.L. Stine and Wes Craven, “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl” book series is soon to be a TV series with the Weinstein Company. McKenzie will be speaking about what it’s like to be a triple threat: YouTuber, author and actress beginning when she was still in high school. This event is for teens and adults at the Poland library on Oct. 11 at 9 a.m.
Friends of the library to meet in October
Friends of the Poland Library will meet on Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. There will not be a coffee hour. There will be a pot luck luncheon following the speaker and the business meeting. Members are asked to bring a salad or casserole. Officers will provide the dessert. Debbie Liptak, Development Director of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, will be the speaker. Her topic will be “All That’s New at the Library.” Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs for the Poland library book cart may be bought to all meetings. Meetings are open to the public and new members are welcome. Dues are $10 dollars yearly.
Prince of Peace has change in Sunday morning schedule
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, located at 2985 Center Road in Poland, is changing its Sunday morning schedule, beginning on Rally Day, Sept. 17. Historical society to have bus trip Nov 15
The Society has announced plans for a fundraiser bus trip to Cambridge, Ohio to visit Charles Dickens Village on Nov. 15. The bus departs from Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road (State Route 224) at 8:30 a.m. and arrives in Cambridge at 11 a.m. The day’s schedule includes a guided tour of the Dickens Historical Village mannequins; Kennedy’s Bakery; Guernsey County Historical Society; lunch on your own at Theo’s, a home-cooking style restaurant; downtown shopping in unique shops; Cambridge Glass Museum and Dickens Courthouse Light Show. The bus departs for home at 6 p.m. The cost is $85 per person and includes bus and all admissions, lunch not included. Proceeds will benefit the efforts of the Poland Historical Society in preserving the history of Poland. ABWA network council to have fall event on Sept. 24
The Network Council of Mahoning Valley ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) is sponsoring it’s fall event celebrating the founding of the organization. The function will take place on Sept. 24 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Area women are invited to attend this event. Doors will open at noon. The meal will be served at 1 p.m., consisting of a buffet of stuffed chicken, stuffed shells, roast pork, au gratin potatoes, California medley vegetables, assorted salads and an apple dumpling with ice cream for dessert. The speaker for this occasion will be Kara White-Peska, the innkeeper of the historical Peter Allen Inn and event center in Kinsman. Tickets are $20 per person. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
