Quarter auction presented to benefit local charities
The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its second Quarter Auction on Oct. 21 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bidding starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and the proceeds will benefit local charities. Chips, popcorn, water and soda will be available for purchase. Chaney class of 1956 to meet

Newcomers to host first meeting
Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will host its first meeting at Bruno’s on Sept. 27. The gathering begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Jeanne Vild and Lori Brennan will be hosting the event. The meeting will cover summer activities and preview the plans and schedules for 2017-2018 year. Needlework, Roundtowners and movie and book clubs will also be reviewed. Newcomers was formed 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the community. Area dancers travel for square dance
On Sept. 30, the North Bloomfield Historical Society will host a Square Dance at the Town Hall, located at state routes 45 and 87, from 7-9:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The admission is $5 per person. For more information, call 330-506-3370.
Fitch orchestra in need of instrument donations
The Fitch High School orchestra program is asking the community for instrument donations for students unable to rent or buy their own. Orchestra Instructor Sara Eliser said she is specifically looking for violins, violas, cellos and double basses to grow the orchestra program. All donations can be brought to Fitch High School and would be greatly appreciated by the students of the program.
Austintown Fitch hosts financial aid night
On Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. in the Fitch High School cafeteria, the Guidance Department will host a financial aid night for college bound students and their parent/guardians. Gina McHenry, Financial Aid representative for Youngstown State University, will inform students and parents about the FAFSA and the financial aid process when applying to colleges and universities.
Night at the Races event announced
Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue will host a Night at the Races on Oct. 14 at the Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with the first race running at 7 p.m. Admission is $10. In addition to the Chinese Auction, there will be a 50/50 raffle, lottery tree, food and alcohol for sale. Read to Reese
On the second Saturday of each month, go to the Austintown library and read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners. Solve a murder mystery at the library
“Real Murders” are occurring at the library. The latest is the murder of Charlaine Schulz. “Last Scene Alive” at “the Julius House” and later found dead at the Austintown library. Someone clearly had “a Bone to Pick” with her, but who? Prizes awarded to the Best Guess and Best Dressed, so put on your thinking caps and “Teagarden” party hats. Registration is required. (Knowledge of the Aurora Teagarden Mystery books is not necessary; all information needed to solve the crime will be provided). This event is for adults and will take place on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
Author and Youtube sensation Paige McKenzie to appear at the library
Help celebrate Teen Read Week with YouTube star, Paige McKenzie. McKenzie is the face of “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl” Network, now boasting a viewership of 230 million and author of the best-selling young adult trilogy of the same name. Praised by R.L. Stine and Wes Craven, “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl” book series is soon to be a TV series with the Weinstein Company. McKenzie will be speaking about what it’s like to be a triple threat: YouTuber, author and actress, beginning when she was still in high school. This event is for teens and adults. Something new for the Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus #3930 will be sponsoring a Swiss Steak dinner on Oct. 15 in the Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown, from 12-6 p.m. All dinners include Swiss steak, real mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, salad, bread and butter, desserts and beverages. Dinners cost $8 for a 5 ounce steak and $10 for a 10 ounce steak. Choose dine-in or surbside service. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction. Austintown Friends of the Library to meet on Sept. 25
The Austintown Friends of the Library will meet at 10 a.m. on Sept. 25 in the meeting room of the Austintown library, located at 600 S. Raccoon Road. The presentation is “The Decline and Fall of the Mahoning Valley Steel Industry” with guest speaker William Farragher, who had a long and active career in the local steel industry. Farragher, former Sheet & Tube director of Marketing, created the Youngstown Sheet & Tube logo. The presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments for the September meeting will be pie, tea and coffee. The Friends encourage anyone interested in joining this group to attend. The Austintown Friends group is a part of the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC). The Friends take donations of materials on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 10 a.m. until noon at the entrance of the Austintown library. They take books (no encyclopedias or textbooks), DVDs, CDs and current magazines. The sale of donated items is used to support library programs.
