Shorted by wildlife

CANFIELD

A small animal or bird shorted out two circuits on Ohio Edison’s Canfield substation, knocking out between 700-800 customers in Canfield and Canfield Township at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Edison crews had restored power by 9:30 p.m. to about half the customers who lost electricity, and a company spokesman said power would be restored to the rest of the customers as soon as possible. As of 9:30 p.m., that number was 361.

River mayors award

VIENNA

Western Reserve Port Authority announced Wednesday that the Excellence in Economic Development Awards Advisory Committee recently awarded the Silver Excellence in Economic Development Award to the Mahoning River Corridor Mayor’s Association, which is now administered by the port authority.

The mayor’s association was formed to bring together the mayors of the cities along the Mahoning River to clean up contaminated former industrial properties once used to make the Mahoning Valley the third largest steel-producing region in the world.

Sentenced for thefts

WARREN

Brian M. Dotson, 33, of Stanton Avenue in Niles, was sentenced to five years in prison this week in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court after being convicted at trial of nine charges related to thefts from Johnny K’s Power Sports on Youngstown Road, Niles, in 2014.

Dotson was found guilty of theft of motorcycles and ATVs at trial last month before Judge Peter Kontos.

Rabies clinic

DAMASCUS

The Mahoning County District Board of Health is offering a rabies vaccination clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Damascus Fire Department, 14860 S. Pricetown Road (state Route 534). In Mahoning County, a rabies vaccination is required for all dogs, cats and ferrets over three months of age.

Cost is $8 per shot, cash only. No appointment is necessary. Pet owners must have their pets on a leash, in a cage or carried inside a pillowcase. This is a low-cost clinic that does not include a physical examination of the animal. A three-year booster vaccination is available for animals whose owners provide proof of a previous shot record that has not expired within the current year.

The clinic sponsors are Courtney O’Neill, D.V.M., Austintown Veterinary Clinic, and Damascus Ruritan Club.

Route 224 reopened

ELLSWORTH

The Ohio Department of Transportation said Wednesday U.S. Route 224 between Ellsworth and Bailey roads has reopened. That section of road had been closed since Monday for a culvert replacement.

Howland park cleanup

HOWLAND

Howland Health & Wellness Committee in conjunction with Howland Park Board and Howland Rotary Club will begin the process of cleaning up Howland Township Park, 2000 Rosegarden Drive NE, at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Sunset at the Farm

CANFIELD

Mill Creek MetroParks will host “Sunset at the Farm” from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

The public is invited to watch the sunset, enjoy folk music, roast marshmallows over a campfire, explore the animal barns and walk through a corn maze. There also will be cider and apple-butter demonstrations.

The event is free. Pony rides, face painting and refreshments will be available for a fee.

Pink Ribbon Run

Trumbull Memorial Hospital’s 12th annual Pink Ribbon Run-Walk to raise awareness of breast cancer and encourage health and fitness will take place Saturday at the hospital, 1353 E. Market St.

Registration begins at 6 a.m., with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The 5K race starts at 9:15 a.m., and the 1-mile starts at 9:25 a.m. at TMH and runs through residential areas.
