NASCAR driver killed in plane crash

NORTH BRANFORD, CONN.

Police have identified the second person killed in a plane crash that claimed the life of NASCAR modified champion racer Ted Christopher in Connecticut.

Police said Sunday 81-year-old Charles Dundas, a resident of New York and Florida, also was killed in the Saturday crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed two people were aboard a small Mooney M20C plane that went down in the woods near the North Branford-Guilford border shortly before 2 p.m. Police say the crash killed the pilot and passenger.

NASCAR officials identified the 59-year-old Christopher as the passenger. Christopher was to have competed Saturday night at Riverhead Raceway in New York.

Police say they don’t know where the plane took off or where it was headed. The FAA is investigating. The National Transportation Safety Board also will investigate.

Hamilton wins Singapore Grand Prix

SINGAPORE

Lewis Hamilton profited from the chaos to win the Singapore Grand Prix and extend his championship lead on Sunday, while title rival Sebastian Vettel lost huge ground after crashing out on the first lap.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo prevented a Mercedes 1-2 by finishing ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who placed third.

Vettel can have little complaint as he seemed to cause the first-turn mayhem, despite starting from pole position. The crash caused a domino effect, taking out his Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso.

Having started from fifth, on one of the toughest tracks in Formula One for overtaking, Hamilton could not believe his luck. The field opened up perfectly for the British driver to seal his third straight win, seventh of the season and 60th overall. He now has a commanding 28-point lead over Vettel with just six races remaining.

Goalie breaks nose, jaw and eye socket

STUTTGART, GERMANY

Stuttgart captain Christian Gentner is expected to make a full recovery after breaking his lower and lateral eye-socket, nose and upper-jaw in the side’s Bundesliga win over Wolfsburg on Saturday.

Stuttgart says the 32-year-old Gentner will undergo surgery in the coming days.

Gentner was struck in the head by Koen Casteels’ knee as the Wolfsburg goalkeeper came out to clear a high ball late in the game. Play was suspended as the unconscious Gentner received attention on the pitch before he was taken off on a stretcher.

Stuttgart sporting director Michael Reschke describes the injuries as a “cruel blow” for Gentner, and the club wishes him “a speedy recovery.”

Rockhold wins at UFC Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH

No. 3 middleweight Luke Rockhold beat David Branch with a flurry of strikes in the second round of a showdown between ranked fighters Saturday night, re-establishing himself as a top contender in the division.

Rockhold (16-3) took Branch to the ground in the second round and established top control, hammering blows on Branch’s head and neck. Branch submitted 4:05 into the period.

Branch (21-4) showed off his boxing prowess early, backing Rockhold up against the cage with an aggressive attack in the first round. That led the jiu-jitsu-trained Rockhold to take him to the ground.

The fight was Rockhold’s first since losing the middleweight title to Michael Bisping last June. Rockhold suffered a knee injury while training for a fight against Jacare Souza in November.
