Mount Union 69, Marietta 3

ALLIANCE

No. 2-ranked Mount Union moved to 2-0 and opened Ohio Athletic Conference play with a win over Marietta. Mount Union forced six Marietta turnovers for the game while the offense scored on seven of its eight first half possessions to get out to a 45-3 halftime lead. Raiders quarterback D’Angelo Fulford threw five touchdowns. The Raiders went 58 yards before Alex Louthan kicked a 45-yard field goal to give Mount Union a 3-0 lead. Fulford threw his fifth TD pass of the day on the first drive of the second half with a strike to Ruth to take it to 52-3. Louthan finished the scoring with a field goal and a pair of interception returns for TDs from Richard Morris.

Thiel 28, Bethany 13

BETHANY

Despite taking a lead into halftime, Bethany College was defeated by Thiel College. After a Bethany (0-3, 0-1 Presidents’ Athetlic Conference) three-and-out to open the game, Thiel (1-2, 1-0 PAC) marched 77 yards down the field to the Bison eight-yard line and were faced with a third-and-goal. Tomcat quarterback Ronald Brown rolled to his right and found an open Justin Zinsmeister in the end zone to give Thiel a 7-0 lead less than seven minutes in. The Tomcats plunged into the end zone on a third down play to take a 14-13 lead with 1:18 left in the third quarter. A pair of Nick Barca touchdowns on each of Thiel’s next two possessions sealed the Tomcats’ win.

John Carroll 24, Baldwin Wallace 21

BEREA

Baldwin Wallace rallied from 15 points down but it was not enough as it fell to crosstown rival John Carroll. JC (1-1, 1-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) kicked the game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter to secure its fifth straight series victory. BW (1-1, 0-1 OAC) was led by junior quarterback Jake Hudson. The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 21-21 when QB John Kromalic threw the two-point conversion pass to defensive lineman Sekou Imani. John Carroll closed out the scoring when Matt Danko connected on a 21-yard field goal.

DePauw 55, Hiram 28

HIRAM

Despite another 366 yards passing from junior quarterback Randy Tucker, Hiram dropped their North Coast Athletic Conference opener to DePauw. DePauw’s Matt Labus connected for five touchdowns. The momentum swing came between the second and third quarter as DePauw scored 34 points and had four touchdown passes by Labus. Hiram’s offense picked up intensity in the late third and into the fourth, outscoring DePauw 21-7. In the fourth, DJ Franklin caught a pair of touchdown passes. The first on a five-yard curl route, the second in the front corner of the end zone on a pass from Tucker.

Case Western Reserve 42, Grove City 10

CLEVELAND

Case Western Reserve University senior running back Jacob Burke matched his own school record with four rushing touchdowns, senior quarterback Rob Cuda added his seventh-career 100-yard rushing effort, and wide receiver Giuseppe Orsini caught a pair of touchdown passes, as the Spartans topped Grove City College (0-3, 0-1 Presidents’ Athletic Conference). The Spartans (2-0, 1-0 PAC) scored on their first two drives of the contest. Grove City cut the lead in half with a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter, but Burke’s run into the end zone extended CWRU’s lead 21-7. Burke capped off the scoring with a run early in the fourth and put the game out of reach.
