Youngstown schools expand after-school program for K-8
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown City Schools will provide an expanded after-school program beginning Sept. 25.
This year’s program is for kindergarten through eighth-graders and will include academics, fun enrichment activities and exposure to fundamental sports skills.
Sessions begin immediately after school and run until 6:30 p.m. for the elementary schools and until 6 p.m. at Rayen Early College Intermediate School.
Dinner and a healthy snack as well as busing home will be provided by the school district, and it’s all free to families.
The district is partnering with the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, which offers its Success After 6 program at Williamson, Taft, Paul C. Bunn, Martin Luther King Jr. and William Holmes McGuffey elementary schools, in the after-school initiative. Success After 6 services kindergarten through sixth-graders.
Success After 6 coordinators will oversee the after-school program with the school district providing i-Ready, which is computer based, as the academic component. The students will go through rotations that focus on i-Ready and several educationally based enrichment opportunities with key partners, the district said in a news release.
While the UW works with kindergarten through sixth-graders at the five elementary schools, the Boys & Girls Club of Youngstown will provide programming for seventh- and eighth-graders.
Other partners include Inspiring Minds, which works at Harding Elementary, and The Red Zone, a community outreach organization that provides connections to therapeutic services.
Students also will have the opportunity to participate in physical activities and learn some fundamental sports skills.
Enrollment forms are available on the district’s website at www.ycsd.org, at the district’s elementary schools and at Rayen Early College.
