Four new firefighters will be sworn in at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the downtown fire station, 420 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., by Mayor John A. McNally.
The new hires are Christopher Tripi, Joseph Stubbs, Michael Donofrio and Zachary Cook.
Most of the cost of salary and benefits for the firefighters for the next three years is being provided through a $398,793 federal grant.
With the hires, the fire department will have a staff of 127.
Also, April Edwards will be promoted to chief fire inspector.
Suspect arrested

A suspect in an Aug. 13 shooting is in custody.
Arlis Casey, 25, was arrested on a warrant Thursday at the police station and is in the Mahoning County jail. Judge Robert Milich set his bond at $50,000 Friday at a hearing in municipal court.
Casey is a suspect in a shooting that wounded a man about 1 a.m. Aug. 13 as he was sitting with another man in a parked SUV on Mistletoe Avenue on the South Side. The shooter then drove away, crashed into a utility pole then ran away on foot and managed to get away, police said. Police retraced his steps and recovered a gun at the Newport Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
The victim was seriously wounded but is expected to recover, police said.

Beginning Monday, all Mahoning County Area Court services will return to 6000 Mahoning Ave., Suite 254.
Court functions had been suspended in the township since July 6 because of issues created by a sewage backup. During that time, matters were heard in the Canfield and Boardman area courts.
Academic olympiad
YOUNGSTOWN
Many Youngstown City Schools students are expected to attend the 2017 Academic Achievement Olympiad on Sunday, where they will be honored for their hard work in the classroom.
The Olympiad, presented by the Family Empowerment Student Achievement Institute in cooperation with the city schools, begins at 4 p.m. at Youngstown State University’s Beeghly Center. District CEO Krish Mohip will offer attendees a district update.
Sunday’s event marks the seventh Academic Olympiad for the Family Empowerment Student Achievement Institute, which was established in 2006. Several thousand people, including students, their families and members of the community, are expected to attend.
Vocal performance
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown City Schools’ Visual and Performing Arts Vocal Crew will be performing at 12:30 p.m. today at St. George Croatian Hall for the Chaney High School Class of 1952’s 65th Reunion.
The VPA Vocal Crew will focus on songs from that era to perform for the Class of 1952. But members of the Class of 1952 had a couple of requests: the Chaney Alma Mater and Etta James’ classic, “At Last.” The VPA Vocal Crew is led by music directors Sonny Cashbaugh and William Eldridge.
Minutes with mayor

Mayor John A. McNally will have his monthly “Five Minutes with the Mayor” on Tuesday, starting at 5 p.m., in his first-floor office at city hall, 26 S. Phelps St. Residents are invited to visit with the mayor for up to five minutes and voice concerns or ask questions regarding city issues.
