Kravitz Deli celebrates owner’s birthday with $6 corned beef
Kravitz Delicatessen is celebrating owner Jack Kravitz’s 60th birthday with corned beef sandwiches for $6 on Sept. 19 while supplies last. The sale will begin at 10 a.m. at Kravitz locations in the Poland library, the Garden Caf at Fellows Riverside Gardens and in Liberty, located at 3135 Belmont Avenue. In 2014, Kravitz Delicatessen was recognized by Case Western Reserve University as one of the Weatherhead 100 fastest growing businesses in Northeast Ohio. It was the only food business to earn the award that year, and one of only two businesses recognized from the Mahoning Valley. Prince of Peace has change in Sunday morning schedule
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, located at 2985 Center Road in Poland, is changing its Sunday morning schedule, beginning on Rally Day, Sept. 17. Dobbins raises money for hurricane relief
Some of the smallest Poland Bulldogs are coming together with older Bulldogs to raise money for hurricane relief. The PTO at Dobbins Elementary is selling raffle tickets for “Lunch with a Bulldog.” Raffle winners will get to sit on the stage with varsity football players and cheerleaders for lunch on Sept. 22. Raffle tickets are on sale at lunch through Sept. 21. One ticket costs $1 or you can buy six tickets for $5. Dobbins PTO is donating all of the money raised to the Red Cross for hurricane relief.
PSHS hosts financial aid workshop
There will be a financial aid workshop at Poland Seminary High School on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. This workshop is geared to parents of graduating seniors and is intended to answer the many questions concerning the financial aid process. Parents of juniors are also welcome to attend to get an idea of what is forthcoming. Speakers at the workshop will be Gina McHenry from YSU’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship, along with Poland High School’s Guidance Counselors, Mike Vagas and Judy Volosin. Specific topics to be addressed include types of financial aid, how the financial aid process works, completing the FAFSA, alternative funding sources for higher education and a questions and answers session.
Holy Family seniors to meet
The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet on Sept. 18 at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. Hostesses for this meeting will be Martha Antol, Loretta Bodnark and Carol Huck. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by Bingo and card games. Historical society to have meeting and bus trip
The Poland Historical Society will host its next meeting on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224) in Poland Township. Following the meeting at 7:30 p.m., there will be a program about the history of Poland churches. Earlier this year, the Society had representatives from the four oldest churches in Poland talk about their history. This month, the focus will be on the next four oldest churches in Poland: Holy Family Catholic Church, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Poland Village Baptist Church and Bethel Friends Church. The Society has announced plans for a fundraiser bus trip to Cambridge, Ohio to visit Charles Dickens Village on Nov. 15. The bus departs from Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road (State Route 224) at 8:30 a.m. and arrives in Cambridge at 11 a.m. The day’s schedule includes a guided tour of the Dickens Historical Village mannequins; Kennedy’s Bakery; Guernsey County Historical Society; lunch on your own at Theo’s, a home-cooking style restaurant; downtown shopping in unique shops; Cambridge Glass Museum and Dickens Courthouse Light Show. The bus departs for home at 6 p.m. The cost is $85 per person and includes bus and all admissions, lunch not included. Proceeds will benefit the efforts of the Poland Historical Society in preserving the history of Poland. Local chapter of Military Officers Association to meet
The Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association (MSVC-MOAA) will host the 2017 Ohio Council of Chapters Convention to take place at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) in Vienna on Sept. 22 and 23. This is the first time the state-wide convention will be hosted by the local chapter and the first time it is taking place in the Youngstown-Warren area. MOAA members from chapters all across the state representing seven regional councils will converge at the Consolidated Activities Center at the Youngstown Air Base on Sept. 22 with registration and a meet-and-greet social starting at 6 p.m.
Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Sept. 18
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on Sept. 18 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. ABWA network council to have fall event on Sept. 24
The Network Council of Mahoning Valley ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) is sponsoring it’s fall event celebrating the founding of the organization. The function will take place on Sept. 24 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Area women are invited to attend this event. Doors will open at noon. The meal will be served at 1 p.m., consisting of a buffet of stuffed chicken, stuffed shells, roast pork, au gratin potatoes, California medley vegetables, assorted salads and an apple dumpling with ice cream for dessert. Join the Poland library every Thursday in September at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
“Dragons Love Tacos”
Go to the Poland library on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. for a program on “Dragons Love Tacos.” Based on the best-selling books by Adam Rubin, the library’s fiesta includes story time, games and a taco craft bar.
