Run and walk event to take place on Sept. 16
Boardman St. Charles Knights of Columbus #11915, Westview and State Route 224, is hosting its seventh annual 5K Run/1 Mile Walk throughout its neighborhood on Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. Registration is for the run $20 and $15for the walk on race day. The USATF (United States Association of Track and Field) - Lake Erie Association has also recently designated this 5K to be the “Regional Championship” for the Lake Erie Association. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on Sept. 18 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left Of Center And Other Stories” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ Christie will also be discussing plans for the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day event in December. Military Officers Association to meet
The Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association (MSVC-MOAA) will host the 2017 Ohio Council of Chapters Convention to take place at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) in Vienna on Sept. 22 and 23. This is the first time the state-wide convention will be hosted by the local chapter and the first time it is taking place in the Youngstown-Warren area. MOAA members from chapters all across the state representing seven regional councils will converge at the Consolidated Activities Center at the Youngstown Air Base on Sept. 22 with registration and a meet-and-greet social starting at 6 p.m.
Blood drive
There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Boardman library on Sept. 25 from 1:30-6:30 p.m., proudly serving the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). This event is for adults.
ABWA network council to have fall event on Sept. 24
The Network Council of Mahoning Valley ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) is sponsoring it’s fall event celebrating the founding of the organization. The function will take place on Sept. 24 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Area women are invited to attend this event. Doors will open at noon. The meal will be served at 1 p.m., consisting of a buffet of stuffed chicken, stuffed shells, roast pork, au gratin potatoes, California medley vegetables, assorted salads and an apple dumpling with ice cream for dessert. The speaker for this occasion will be Kara White-Peska, the innkeeper of the historical Peter Allen Inn and event center in Kinsman. Tickets are $20 per person. Master Gardeners Judy Rodkey and Cynthia Faust will discuss how to plant spring bulbs and put your garden to bed for winter at this event at the Boardman library on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Registration is required. This event is for adults.
Science stories with Ryan Martino
Ryan Martino, one-half of the driving force behind national drag racing standouts Martino Motorsports, will be on hand at the Boardman library on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. to read stories about cars, sign autographs and host a question-and-answer session about their 215-plus MPH race vehicle and success on the NHRA drag racing circuit. Children will be able to make a craft, too. This event is for children (and adults) of all ages.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play at this event at the Boardman library on Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for ages 2-6. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, taking place on every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Boardman library on Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
I Read YA! book club
This event, on Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library, is for adult fans of Young Adult literature from ages 18-118. This is your chance to talk about why you like YA. Read and discuss books. This month the group will be discussing “The Hate You Give” by Angie Thomas. This event is for adults.
BUMC has fall sale event
Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market Street, will host a Fall Trash and Treasure sale on Oct. 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be a presale day on Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. at the cost of $2 per shopper. Thursday is bargain bag day. Lunch will be available for purchase on Wednesday only.
Baby Bargain Boutique table reservations beginning soon
Boardman Park will be having its semi-annual Baby Bargain Boutique on Sept. 23 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation for a local Food Bank. For those who have items to sell, the park will start taking reservations for table rentals on Aug. 23 for Boardman residents only and Aug. 24 – open to everyone. Table reservations can be made at the park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Indoor and outdoor spots are available. The cost for Boardman residents is $25 for an under pavilion table and $20 for an outside spot. The cost for non-residents is $30 for an under pavilion table and $25 for an outside spot. The event is “Rain or Shine” and will not be rescheduled due to weather. Outside spots must bring their own table or rent one from the park at $7 per table and may use a pop-up tent. Michael Covert Benefit to be Sept. 30
The Lanai Lounge, located at 7631 South Ave. in Boardman, will host the second Michael Covert Benefit on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. There will be a 50/50 raffle, Chinese auction, mystery bottle raffle, complimentary appetizers and desserts, drink specials and more. All proceeds will be donated to the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association of America (debra of America), the only non-profit organization for Epidermolysis Bullosa. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
