Car, truck and bike show to benefit American Cancer Society

Mary’s Pink Ribbon Racers Relay for Life Team will host a benefit Car, Truck and Bike Show from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Austintown Eagles, locatd at 1655 S. Raccoon Road (across from Wedgewood Pizza). The entry fee is $3 per vehicle. There is free admittance for spectators and goody bags will be offered for the first 50 registrants. There will be door prizes, raffles, 50/50, children’s activities, a D.J., and food and drinks available all-day. There will be “Ghostbusters” and “Back-to-the-Future” cars. The rain date will be Sept. 24.

The Knights of Columbus #3930 sponsor pasta dinner

The Knights of Columbus #3930 will be sponsoring a pasta dinner fund raiser to benefit Emily Lucas (who has stage 4 breast cancer). The event will take place at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown on Sept. 17 from 12-5 p.m. Dinners include pasta, meatballs, tossed salad, bread/butter, dessert and beverages. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese Auction. Dinners for adults are $8, children ages 6-12 are $4 and children under six eat free.

Austintown Fitch teacher receives new CPR dummies

Thanks to some very generous donors, Austintown Fitch High School science teacher Kelli Anderson now has 20 newly delivered CPR dummies and 200 replacement “lungs” for her Intro to Healthcare classes. The idea sparked last school year when Anderson was thinking about a hands on learning tool she could use for her healthcare class. During her research she came across donorschoose.org. CPR will now be a graduation requirement beginning with the class of 2018. Anderson set up the project last school year at beginning of May and quickly started receiving money. By May 17, she had raised $2,314 from 12 donors.

Austintown Friends of the Library to meet on Sept. 25

The Austintown Friends of the Library will meet at 10 a.m. on Sept. 25 in the meeting room of the Austintown library, located at 600 S. Raccoon Road. The presentation is “The Decline and Fall of the Mahoning Valley Steel Industry” with guest speaker William Farragher, who had a long and active career in the local steel industry. Farragher, former Sheet & Tube director of Marketing, created the Youngstown Sheet & Tube logo. The presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments for the September meeting will be pie, tea and coffee. The Friends encourage anyone interested in joining this group to attend. The Austintown Friends group is a part of the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC). The Friends take donations of materials on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 10 a.m. until noon at the entrance of the Austintown library. They take books (no encyclopedias or textbooks), DVDs, CDs and current magazines. The sale of donated items is used to support library programs.

Local author donates to relief funds

Nancy Christie is celebrating the third birthday of her short fiction collection, “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” by donating a portion of her book sales during September to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Christie’s donation will include both online and in-person sales through the month of September. In October and November, she will be donating a portion of the proceeds from her newest book, “Rut-Busting Book for Writers” (Mill City Press), to relief efforts for those impacted by both the Texas and Florida hurricanes. Local theater to have auditions

The Hopewell Theatre, formerly the Victorian Players, will host auditions for “It’s A Wonderful Life, the Musical” (based on the film by Frank Capra) on Sept. 17, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Cast requirements are as follows: 12 men (ages 18 and older), 10 women (ages 18 and older) and six children (ages 7-12). Come prepared to sing a refrain from a song which shows your range. An accompanist will be provided. Come dressed for stage movement. Directing is Nick Mulichak. Choreographer is Joanna Andrei. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Sept. 18

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on Sept. 18 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left Of Center And Other Stories” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ Christie will also be discussing plans for the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day event in December. Friends of the Austintown library meeting and presentation

Authors and their worlds

Match the authors with the worlds they created during the month of September at the Austintown library. Turn into the librarian and receive a prize. This event is for school-age children in grades K-6.

Family Game Night

Join the Austintown library on Sept. 21 from 6-8 p.m. for all or part of its two-hour game night. They will have everything for you and your family to enjoy together, including board games, giant games, video games and a basketball game.

Local chapter of Military Officers Association to meet

The Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association (MSVC-MOAA) will host the 2017 Ohio Council of Chapters Convention to take place at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) in Vienna on Sept. 22 and 23. This is the first time the state-wide convention will be hosted by the local chapter and the first time it is taking place in the Youngstown-Warren area. MOAA members from chapters all across the state representing seven regional councils will converge at the Consolidated Activities Center at the Youngstown Air Base on Sept. 22 with registration and a meet-and-greet social starting at 6 p.m.

ABWA network council to have fall event on Sept. 24

The Network Council of Mahoning Valley ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) is sponsoring it’s fall event celebrating the founding of the organization. The function will take place on Sept. 24 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Area women are invited to attend this event. Doors will open at noon. The meal will be served at 1 p.m., consisting of a buffet of stuffed chicken, stuffed shells, roast pork, au gratin potatoes, California medley vegetables, assorted salads and an apple dumpling with ice cream for dessert. The speaker for this occasion will be Kara White-Peska, the innkeeper of the historical Peter Allen Inn and event center in Kinsman. Tickets are $20 per person. Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play at this event at the Austintown library on Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for ages 2-6. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Pre-kindergarten story time

This program, taking place on every Wednesday in September at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. You will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.

Bonding with babies and books

This event, taking place on every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

“Dragons Love Tacos”

Go to the Austintown library on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. for a program on “Dragons Love Tacos.” Based on the best-selling books by Adam Rubin, the library’s fiesta includes story time, games and a taco craft bar. This is nacho average program, so bring the whole family. Snacks will be served. This event is for children of all ages.

Gotta Move Story Time

This event, taking place every Thursday in September at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for children, ages 2-5, who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

September craft

There will be a grab and go craft for September during regular hours at the Austintown library. Make a craft to take home. This event is for children of all ages.

Guess the picture book

Guess the picture book from the cut up cover during regular hours at the Austintown library throughout September. One winner chosen at random from correct entries. Children of all ages are welcome to enter.

Ninjago movie celebration

Celebrate the Lego Ninjago movie release with all things Lego on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Enjoy games, a craft and more. This event is for school-age children.

Find “It” in the library

To celebrate the 2017 movie release of “It,” based on the 1986 Stephen King novel of the same name, the library be hiding “evil clowns” in the adult and teen areas of the library. Submit the number of clowns you spotted, and a random winner drawn from the correct entries will earn a prize. This event is for teens. This event will take place during the month of September during regular library hours.

Paper crafting corner

Join the Austintown library every month to learn how to create a different paper craft. The September event will take place on Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. You must register for the event.

Paper crafting tools 101

This class on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Austintown library will help beginner crafters learn how use crafting tools from basic to advanced; paper cutters and border punches to an electronic die cut machine and many tools in-between. This event is for adults.

Basic computer class

Learn very basic computer skills at this program at the Austintown library on Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. This is a beginner’s class that will cover use of a mouse, computer terms and simple internet use. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 330-744-8636 and specify library to register. This event is for adults.

Page Turners book club

If you love books or are looking for a good read, check out the Page Turners book club on Sept. 20 from 6-7 p.m. at the Austintown library. Hear what others are reading and share your favorite read, or just come in and join the fun. This event is for adults.

Alumni association sells raffle tickets

The Austintown Alumni Association is selling raffle tickets for this year’s scholarship and mini grant fundraiser. Members are selling a book of six raffle tickets for $5 or individual tickets for $1 each. The first prize is $500 cash, second prize contains gift certificates to local businesses worth at least $200 and third prize is a dinner for two at Rachel’s Restaurant and a dinner for two at The Manor, valued at $50 each. Proceeds from this project support the association’s scholarship fund, which awarded $6,000 to Fitch seniors who graduated in June, and $1,000 in mini grants to teachers who applied for these grants. The winners of this year’s raffle will be announced during half time at the football game at Falcon Stadium on Sept. 22. Tickets can be purchased until half time or by contacting Austintown Alumni Association president Lynn Larson at 330-518-5727.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
