AUSTINTOWN

Township trustees got an update on road-resurfacing projects and issued a fundraising challenge to area officials.

Township Administrator Michael Dockry said at Monday’s trustee meeting road resurfacing is slated to begin at the end of this month or early October. He said resurfacing will be finished by the end of October.

“We’re probably going to be the last project on the calendar for the [paving] contractor,” Dockry said.

It’s a joint road-resurfacing effort involving Austintown, Canfield and Boardman townships through contractor Butch & McCree Paving of Hillsville, Pa.

The American Cancer Society gave a presentation at the meeting announcing a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser walk at Austintown Fitch High School on Oct. 7. Registration begins at 9 a.m. that day, and the walk begins at 10 a.m.

“We’re going to issue a challenge to the Boardman Trustees and Mahoning County commissioners,” Trustee Jim Davis said.

The challenge: See who can raise the most money. Whoever raises the least amount of money, Davis said, must wear a pink tutu and bow tie for the duration of the walk. Proceeds fund breast-cancer research.

Also, trustees paid tribute to the life and achievements of late state Sen. Harry Meshel, who died Sept. 4 and was buried Saturday.

Trustee Ken Carano said he considered Meshel a member of his family. He said he was compared to Meshel in a newspaper headline that read “Carano will just be another Harry Meshel.”

“I sent them [the newspaper] a thank-you letter,” he said.
