Saturday’s games

Kent State 38, Howard 31

KENT

Nick Holley passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, Keasean Gamble ran for two scores, and Kent State rallied late to beat Howard. Gamble’s plunge and a 2-point conversion capped Kent State’s next drive for the go-ahead score in the fourth. Theo Eboigbe recovered Newton’s fumble on Howard’s next possession and Gamble capped the Golden Flashes (1-1) drive with a 3-yard TD run for a 38-24 lead. Holley gained 119 yards on 21 carries for his sixth 100-yard game in nine starts.

Army 21, Buffalo 17

WEST POINT, N.Y.

Darnell Woolfolk scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the fourth quarter to lead Army past Buffalo. The victory for Army (2-0) avenged an overtime loss to the Bulls a year ago and extended the Black Knights’ winning streak to five dating to last season. Woolfolk’s game-winner came on fourth down with 4:53 left after Kell Walker was ruled out-of-bounds before reaching past the right pylon on the previous play.

Ball State 51, UAB 31

MUNCIE, IND.

Malik Dunner returned a kickoff for a 93-yard touchdown and Ball State scored 20 unanswered points in the second half for a victory over UAB. Ball State (1-1) took its opening possession of the second half 65 yards in nine plays for James Gilbert’s 1-yard TD plunge, extending its lead to 28-17. He added another short TD run early in the fourth.

Miami (Ohio) 31, Austin Peay 10

OXFORD

Gus Ragland threw three touchdown passes and Miami (Ohio) pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Austin Peay. Ragland was 11 of 23 for 145 yards passing. Ragland threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Young, and connected on 42 and 34-yard scores to James Gardner to make it 21-7 at halftime. Tony Reid forced an interception and recovered a fumble — both from Jeremiah Oatsvall, the Governors’ freshman quarterback — to stall two Austin Peay drives inside Miami territory.

Northern Illinois 38, Eastern Illinois 10

DEKALB, ILL.

Daniel Santacaterina threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns to lead Northern Illinois to a win over Eastern Illinois. Marcus Jones ran in two more scores, both set up by first-half interceptions, as Northern Illinois (1-1) dominated on defense, holding its in-state FCS rival to just 60 yards rushing and 187 overall. Santacaterina finished 23 of 34 with one interception.

Central Michigan 45, Kansas 27

LAWRENCE, KAN.

Shane Morris threw for 467 yards and five touchdowns on an efficient 28 of 37 attempts while leading Central Michigan to a victory over Kansas. A Kansas field goal made the score 10-6 in Central Michigan’s favor with just under five minutes left until halftime, as the two teams seemed to be fairly evenly-matched. Less than two minutes later, however, Chippewa tight end Logan Hessbrook took a Morris pass 40 yards to the end zone. Then, with just six seconds remaining, receiver Corey Willis snagged a six-yard score as well. Suddenly, it was 24-6 and Central Michigan wouldn’t look back.

South Dakota 35, Bowling Green 27

BOWLING GREEN

Chris Streveler accounted for four touchdowns and 425 yards of offense to lead South Dakota to a victory over Bowling Green. Streveler threw a 72-yard touchdown strike to Kody Case, and ran for three scores from inside the 4-yard line as the Coyotes (2-0) continued to roll after beating Drake, 77-7, in last week’s opener. Streveler was 19 of 34 passing for 306 yards, and added 119 yards on the ground.
