Lake Monsters go deep to take series advantage

Logan Farrar and Greg Deichmann connected on back-to-back homers in the seventh inning, leading the Vermont Lake Monsters to an 8-3 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Saturday in the New York-Penn League game.

The win gives the Lake Monsters a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three first-round playoff series.

Game 2 will be Monday at 7:05 p.m. at Eastwood Field. If necessary, Game 3 will be Tuesday at Eastwood Field.

Farrar hit a grand slam and Deichmann hit a solo shot that gave the Lake Monsters a 6-3 lead.

Heath Donica (1-0) got the win with 11/3 innings of scoreless relief while Felix Tati (7-4) took the loss.

Simeon Lucas homered and singled twice, scoring two runs for the Scrappers.

Sam Hentges started on the mound for the Scrappers, allowing five hits and one earned run. He walked two and struck out four.

The Scrappers used five relievers. Jean Carlos Mejia earned a blown save after he replaced Tati.
