Man gets 34th license suspension

YOUNGSTOWN

An Austintown man who has 33 open suspensions on his license picked up his 34th on Thursday after he was pulled over about 5:45 p.m. at West Warren and Rosedale avenues on the South Side for making an improper turn.

Frank Crone, 38, of Austintown, was cited for driving under suspension and possession of drug paraphernalia after a crack pipe was found under his shoe.

A passenger, Jonathan Chism, 29, of Youngstown, was taken into custody on a felony domestic-violence warrant.

Fire destroys home

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said a vacant 2851 Ridley Ave. home was destroyed early Friday in a fire.

Crews arriving at the East Side home about 12:30 a.m. could not get inside to fight the flames because the first floor was gone. They instead set up to protect surrounding homes. Damage is listed at $3,400.

Mayoral forum

YOUNGSTOWN

A Youngstown mayoral candidates forum will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church’s Helen Chapel, 201 Wick Ave.

The candidates in the November general election are Jamael Tito Brown, Sean McKinney, Cecil Monroe and Janet Tarpley.

Cryshanna Jackson- Leftwich, professor of political science at Youngstown State University, will serve as moderator. The event is hosted by The Salon, a progressive women’s organization based in the Mahoning Valley.

Attendees can access the entrance to the church via Wood Street due to construction on Wick Avenue. This event is free. Light refreshments will be available.

Cleaning ditches

LOWELLVILLE

The Ohio Department of Transportation will be cleaning ditches on state Route 289 on Monday, Tuesday and possibly from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. During those times, traffic along South Hubbard Road will be reduced to one lane.

Hispanic Heritage Month ceremony

YOUNGSTOWN

The opening ceremony for Youngstown State University’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations will take place from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the Mahoning County Courthouse, 120 Market St.

The event will feature a flag ceremony representing 22 Hispanic countries and musical performances. Hispanic Heritage Month runs through Oct. 15.

William Blake, director of the YSU office of student diversity programs, will make opening remarks, and Paulina Montaldo, a Spanish teacher at Ursuline High School, will deliver the keynote address. For information, call 330-941-2087.

Church’s Rally Day

Brookfield United Methodist Church, 6951 Grove St., will celebrate its Rally Day at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, which begins a new Sunday School season. There will be singing, activities and fellowship.

Helping in Florida

WARREN

Servicemaster by Lewis Construction, with offices in Boardman and Howland, is mobilizing its resources to Florida in anticipation of Hurricane Irma.

Kevin Wyndham, managing partner, will arrive in Florida on Tuesday, and his teams will arrive Wednesday with initial plans to stay 30 days.

Among the reasons for the trip are to assist Ohio-based clients with assets at risk in the hurricane zone and to assist other commercial and residential customers, Wyndham said.
