New finance director

CAMPBELL

City council appointed a new finance director and advanced legislation to set the director’s salary at $60,000.

Yanni Tiliakos was appointed as finance director by a unanimous vote Wednesday. Tiliakos replaces former director Michael Evanson, who was appointed finance director in 2012 and retired in July.

The council also advanced to a second hearing legislation that would set Tiliakos’ salary at $60,000. George Levendis, council president, said the salary was needed to attract quality candidates for the position.

“I know people are wondering why we agreed to take the salary up to $60,000,” Levendis said. “Again, you get what you pay for ... we need a finance director who can do the job and get us accurate and timely information; this is something we had to do.”

Water service agreement

CANFIELD

City council has approved a 20-year agreement with the Youngstown Water Department for city water and sewer services.

The contract enters at an established percentage of charge for the first 10 years and grows a small percentage each following year.

Part of the agreement covers established pipelines that run southward in Canfield’s jurisdiction, near Western Reserve Road, to Youngstown.

Council also authorized city leaf pickup through the city manager’s office, adding 14 additional streets to the service.

A fee has been established for sandwich-board use outside of city businesses. Any business approved through council can use sandwich boards outside their storefront by paying a one-time $20 fee.

Jury selection delayed

YOUNGSTOWN

Jury orientation slated for today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court in the capital murder case of Lance Hundley, 47, has been delayed for two weeks so lawyers from the state public defender’s office can meet with Hundley to see if he would agree to their representation.

Judge Maureen Sweeney on Wednesday allowed Hundley to represent himself after he fired his pair of court-appointed attorneys.

Hundley could be put to death if found guilty of the November 2015 beating death of Erika Huff, 41, in her Cleveland Street home. Hundley also faces charges for beating her mother and setting fire to the home.

Stolen property charges

BOARDMAN

Township police Wednesday arrested a woman wanted in connection with stealing from her 92-year-old grandmother, according to a police report.

Krystal Donofrio, 37, of Lake Shore Drive, was arrested on warrants for forgery and receiving stolen property and a Canfield warrant for obstructing official business, according to the report.

The forgery and receiving stolen property charges stem from a report filed in July. A woman reported her granddaughter, Donofrio, lives with her and had stolen $400. The woman also suspected Donofrio of charging more than $500 to her credit cards.

The forgery and receiving stolen property charges are felonies.

Donofrio was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Impaired charge

BOARDMAN

Police arrested a township woman on a felony charge of operating a vehicle early Monday after a traffic stop at Glenwood Avenue and Mill Creek Drive, according to a police report.

According to the report, an officer stopped Katelyn Governale, 26, of Lockwood Boulevard about 2:30 a.m. after observing her speeding.

While speaking with Governale, the officer reported seeing beer in the backseat and smelling a “profound odor of an alcoholic beverage” on her. Police said Governale admitted to drinking “a couple glasses of wine.”

Governale was arrested on a charge of OVI after performing a field sobriety test. The charge was elevated to a felony due to police finding that she had three previous OVI convictions in the past 10 years, according to the report.
