Man pleads guilty to killing wife, kids

NAPLES, Fla.

A Florida man has been convicted of killing his wife and five children.

The Naples Daily News reports that 41-year-old Mesac Damas pleaded guilty to six counts of first-degree murder on Tuesday, which would have been the first day of jury selection. He faces a possible death sentence, which he previously has claimed to want, at an earlier hearing.

Authorities say Damas cut the throats of his wife and children, ranging from 1 to 9 years old, at their North Naples apartment in 2009. He fled to Haiti but was arrested and returned to the U.S.

Damas’ trial had been delayed by mental-competency issues.

Publisher pulls book from pastor

WASHINGTON

A collection of devotionals sent by Hillary Clinton’s pastor to her during her presidential campaign is being pulled because of alleged plagiarism.

The book is called “Strong for a Moment Like This: The Daily Devotions of Hillary Rodham Clinton.” It’s a collection of devotionals the Rev. Bill Shillady emailed Clinton during the campaign.

Shillady, who directs the United Methodist City Society in New York, had already apologized for plagiarizing part of the prayer he sent Clinton the day after she lost the presidential election.

The Rev. Brian K. Milford, president of The United Methodist Publishing House, says the publisher has discovered “other content unattributed by the author.”

He says the publishing house has “zero tolerance” for plagiarism and will remove existing copies from all outlets and have them destroyed.
