Crowing 76 times

Monday’s rooster-crowing contest marked the 55th year of the competition.

About 70 participants turned out. The winning rooster crowed 76 times.

Sunday numbers

Sunday’s attendance at the fair was 86,036 people, according to fair officials.

That brought the five-day attendance total to 227,503 visitors.

With warm, sunny weather Monday, fair officials were optimistic about having strong attendance the last day of the fair.

Last year’s fair turnout of more than 310,000 people marked a high point over the past several years, as it was the biggest attendance the fair had seen since 2010.

Ag-Venture winner

The winner of the first Canfield Fair Ag-Venture, sponsored by Deerfield Ag Services, was Pam Dunleavy.

Fairgoers were invited to stop at 11 different agriculture-related stops around the fairgrounds and get stamps to mark their visits. Stops included the pony palace, poultry barn, antique equipment area and more.

The activity aimed to draw fairgoers to agricultural areas of the fairgrounds.

The grand prize was a $250 Best Buy gift card. The award was presented by Bill Wallbrown of Deerfield; Craig Myers, fair director in charge of farm products; and fair board President Andy Frost.

Texas connection

The last day of the fair ended with a grandstand concert headlined by country music singer Chris Young.

At Monday’s fair board meeting, fair officials noted that Young is a native of Texas.

Media reports indicate that Young has personally pledged $100,000 to support victims of Hurricane Harvey.

In a video posted on Twitter, Young noted that he has friends and family who were impacted by the storm and that a house he owns was damaged.

Young has a GoFundMe page set up, with a goal of raising $500,000. As of Monday, he had raised more than $350,000.
