Boccieri expected to announce he’ll run for state Senate

State Rep. John Boccieri of Poland, D-59th, is expected to announce his bid for the state Senate’s 33rd District seat at 10:30 a.m. today at the Mahoning County War Veterans Memorial, Canfield Fairgrounds, 7265 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

The 33rd District seat is held by state Sen. Joe Schiavoni, who will leave office in 2018 because of term limits. The 33rd District includes all of Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

Boccieri is a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve and a C-130 pilot with more than 400 combat flying hours. He is assigned to the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, where he is director of the Commander’s Action Group for the 910th Airlift Wing.

Injured in crash

BEAVER TOWNSHIP

A Poland man was injured in a two-vehicle crash about 3:15 p.m. Sunday on state Route 164 south of Calla Road and transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Injured was Michael J. Baharis, 31, of Poland, who was southbound on Route 164 and hit the rear of a vehicle driven by Joshua L. Vlosich, 29, of Poland, who was not injured, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield Post. The patrol said that after Baharis’ vehicle hit Vlosich’s, it went off the left side of the road and struck a ditch, a utility pole and two trees before coming to a stop.

The crash remains under investigation by the OSHP. Beaver Township police assisted with traffic control.

YSU students win MathFest awards

Two Youngstown State University mathematics students attending MathFest 2017 in Chicago earned awards for excellence in student exposition and research.

Monica Busser of Hubbard, who presented research titled “Induced Representations,” and Christine Langer of North Canton, whose research was titled “Surprising Nontransitive Games,” won the awards.

It’s the third-consecutive year Busser won an award at MathFest, the annual summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America and Pi Mu Epsilon.

‘Titans’ coach to speak at Beeghly

YOUNGSTOWN

Herman Boone, the legendary high-school football coach featured in the film “Remember the Titans,” will speak at 7 p.m. Sunday in Beeghly Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.

The lecture is part of the Centofanti Annual Symposium and is free. No tickets are required. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
