Mount Union sophomore quarterback D’Angelo Fulford accounted for 291 yards of offense in his second career start. He completed 16 of 21 passes for 213 yards with three touchdowns and ran for 80 yards as he led an offense that generated 449 total yards as the Purple Raiders won their 30th consecutive opener. Mount Union is ranked No. 2 in Division III to start the season. All three touchdown passes went to fellow sophomore Justin Hill, who had five catches for 90 yards. Hill also recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score. Senior Jared Ruth returned two punts for touchdowns, senior Alex Louthan kicked three field goals while linebacker Trey Williams returned an interception 75 yards to finish the scoring. This was all more than enough for a defense that held North Carolina Wesleyan to 56 total yards in the first half and 149 for the game.
Wooster 45, Bluffton 21
WOOSTER
Former Struthers High School quarterback Gary Muntean passed for 271 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a career-best 89 yards — including a go-ahead, 2-yard TD — as the Fighting Scots won their season opener. Muntean completed 17 of 29 passes and carried the ball 18 times for Wooster.
Wittenberg 20, Westminster 14
NEW WILMINGTON, PA.
The Titans nearly pulled off a season-opening upset against the 16th-ranked Tigers. Westminster quarterback Paul Columbo drove his team to the Wittenberg 11-yard line as time was running out, making four first-down completions. But the drive stalled when the Tigers Jack Kayser broke up a pass on fourth-and-9 to clinch the game. Columbo finished 16 of 32 with a game-high 218 passing yards, including a 51-yard TD pass to Jametrius Bentley. Dominique McKinley led Westminster with 76 yards on 18 carries, including a 6-yard TD run.
Marietta 26, Geneva 25
BEAVER FALLS, PA.
Pioneers QB Darrien Fields threw two touchdown passes in the final 6:05 to rally Marietta to a road victory over the Golden Tornadoes. The first TD pass was a 5-yarder to Alex Smith. The go-ahead score came on a 23-yard strike to Andrew Barker with 45 seconds to play. Jimmy Embrescia’s extra-point kick provided the winning point. Fields finished 22 of 30 for 171 yards and three TDs. Tanner Clark led Marietta with 77 yards.
Juniata 42, Grove City 31
HUNTINGDON, PA.
The Wolverines led 24-14 midway through the third quarter, but the Eagles ran off 28 straight points, including two touchdown passes by QB Austin Montgome, to pull away for a season-opening victory. Montgome finished 26 of 32 for 333 yards and four TDs. Brett Laffoon passed for 292 yards and three TDs for Grove City.
Kentucky 24, Southern Miss 17
HATTIESBURG, MISS.
Stephen Johnson threw for 176 yards and a touchdown and Kentucky’s defense recovered two crucial fumbles in the second half to lead the Wildcats over Southern Mississippi. Kentucky was clinging to a 17-10 lead in the third quarter when Darius West slammed his helmet into Southern Miss quarterback Kwadra Griggs’ arm, forcing a fumble that Denzil Ware scooped up and ran 20 yards for the touchdown.Then with the Wildcats leading 24-17 in the fourth quarter, the Kentucky defense killed another Southern Miss drive when Chris Westry forced a fumble that was recovered by former Cardinal Mooney High School standout Courtney Love at midfield.
Robert Morris 13, Dayton 10
MOON TOWNSHIP, PA.
Nick Bisceglia kicked a field goal with four seconds remaining and Robert Morris edged Dayton in the season opener for both teams. The game-winner capped a six-play, 20-yard drive which started after Dayton turned it over on a fumble at its own 27. Devon DeFrances forced the fumble and Ryan Richards Jr. covered the loose ball. Robert Morris tied it at 10 in the third quarter on Jimmy Walker’s 72-yard touchdown pass to Tavin Allison. Dayton built a 10-0 first half lead. Matt Tunnacliffe hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Kaparos in the first quarter and Patrick Sandler added a 25-yard field goal in the second. Bisceglia’s 28-yard field goal with 34 seconds left made it 10-3 at intermission. Walker finished 14 of 29 for 198 yards and Allison had two catches for 76 yards. Cole Blake carried 16 times for 69 yards. Tucker Yinger had 107 yards on 24 carries for the Flyers.
