PUMC to host family fun carnival
There will be a free Family Fun Carnival a Poland United Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland, on Sept. 9 from 12-5 p.m. The event includes free bounce castles, a petting zoo, pony rides, prizes, face painting and fair food will be available.
Yoga class
Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in September from 5-6 p.m. at the Poland branch library in the meeting room. Pay as you attend at $10 per session. This event is for adults.

Local theater to present “Fences”
The Hopewell Theatre (formerly The Victorian Players, Inc.) will present the 1987 Pulitzer Prize winning play “Fences,” by August Wilson. “Fences” has won Drama Desk Awards and Tony Awards and has most recently been produced as an Academy Award winning film. “Fences” explores the life and relationships of the Maxson family. This moving family drama explores the life of Troy Maxson, who struggles to reconcile his life of bad decisions, failed dreams and rejections, while grasping to maintain relationships with his wife and children. Directed by seasoned veteran actress and director, Carla D. Gipson, the play also boasts a mix of experienced and new talented actors and actresses from the Youngstown/Warren area, which include John McCants, Jaietta Jackson, DC Colvin, Duane Davis, Daniel Colvin, Kevin Stringer and Keyirra LaBooth. Friendly Squares seventh anniversary dance Sept. 9
The Niles Friendly Squares will celebrate their seventh anniversary at their monthly square dance on Sept. 9, from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 per person donation at the door. Gene Hammond will be the caller. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin on Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. Each lesson builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play at this event at the Poland library on Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for ages 2-6. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, taking place on every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. at the Poland library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Poland library every Thursday in September at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
“Dragons Love Tacos”
Go to the Poland library on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. for a program on “Dragons Love Tacos.” Based on the best-selling books by Adam Rubin, the library’s fiesta includes story time, games and a taco craft bar. This is nacho average program, so bring the whole family. Snacks will be served. This event is for children of all ages.
Classic book has 50th anniversary
The classic children’s book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?,” written by Bill Martin, Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle, is 50-years-old. Help the Poland library celebrate with stories, games, crafts and snacks on Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. This event is for children of all ages.

Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Roxie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. This event is for fifth-eighth graders: go to the Poland library on Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m. to learn sign language and about Deaf culture through fun, interactive games and activities. A snack will be provided.

Offbeat book club
Join the Poland library on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. for the Offbeat book club. They meet on the first Thursday of every month for a themed club, no required titles to read, though some are occasionally suggested. September’s theme is “Nostalgia, or My favorite Childhood Book.” October will be “Thrillers.” November is “Families-Literary or Real.” In December, they will talk about their favorite fictional characters. Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 12
The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through December with a second session beginning Jan. 9. There is a fee of $6 per person per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills, as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Boardman Park to host Ace Race disc golf tournament
Whether you are new to disc golf or you are a pro, don’t miss Ace Race 2017, taking place on Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Boardman Park. Each year, disc golfers from around the globe gather at their local disc golf courses for one purpose: to throw aces (a hole in one). Tees are moved up so holes are generally between 100 and 150 feet, making every hole “aceable” and allowing players of all abilities to participate. The entry fee is $40 and includes lunch, two Ace Race discs, that you must use that day, and other disc golf gear. The grand prize will be a disc golf bag along with discs to fill it. Additional prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pin, a putting competition and a 50/50 raffle. Register online at boardmandiscgolf.weebly.com or in the Boardman Park office. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
