Rally Day and community picnic at Redeemer Lutheran
Redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 2305 S. Canfield-Niles road in Austintown, will kick off its fall program on Sept. 10 with a Rally Day. This marks the beginning of the new Sunday school term. Sunday school classes are at 9 a.m. The Sunday morning worship service begins at 10:30 a.m., led by Pastor David Schinbeckler. The curriculum is designed for use by the whole family and extends into the worship service. A picnic will begin immediately after the worship service on the church grounds. There will be a fire truck, ambulance and police K-9 unit doing demonstrations, music, 11 different games and prizes and food for children and adults of all ages. Blood drive

Local theater to present “Fences”
The Hopewell Theatre (formerly The Victorian Players, Inc.) will present the 1987 Pulitzer Prize winning play “Fences,” by August Wilson. “Fences” has won Drama Desk Awards and Tony Awards and has most recently been produced as an Academy Award winning film. “Fences” explores the life and relationships of the Maxson family. This moving family drama explores the life of Troy Maxson, who struggles to reconcile his life of bad decisions, failed dreams and rejections, while grasping to maintain relationships with his wife and children. Directed by seasoned veteran actress and director, Carla D. Gipson, the play also boasts a mix of experienced and new talented actors and actresses from the Youngstown/Warren area, which include John McCants, Jaietta Jackson, DC Colvin, Duane Davis, Daniel Colvin, Kevin Stringer and Keyirra LaBooth. Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play at this event at the Austintown library on Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for ages 2-6. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

This program, taking place on every Wednesday in September at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. You will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, taking place on every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Authors and their worlds
Match the authors with the worlds they created during the month of September at the Austintown library. Turn into the librarian and receive a prize. This event is for school-age children in grades K-6.
“Dragons Love Tacos”
Go to the Austintown library on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. for a program on “Dragons Love Tacos.” Based on the best-selling books by Adam Rubin, the library’s fiesta includes story time, games and a taco craft bar. This is nacho average program, so bring the whole family. Snacks will be served. This event is for children of all ages.
Family Game Night
Join the Austintown library on Sept. 21 from 6-8 p.m. for all or part of its two-hour game night. They will have everything for you and your family to enjoy together, including board games, giant games, video games and a basketball game.
Gotta Move Story Time
This event, taking place every Thursday in September at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for children, ages 2-5, who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

On the second Saturday of each month, read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners, at the Austintown library. Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 12
The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through December with a second session beginning Jan. 9. There is a fee of $6 per person per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills, as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Alumni association sells raffle tickets
The Austintown Alumni Association is selling raffle tickets for this year’s scholarship and mini grant fundraiser. Members are selling a book of six raffle tickets for $5 or individual tickets for $1 each. The first prize is $500 cash, second prize contains gift certificates to local businesses worth at least $200 and third prize is a dinner for two at Rachel’s Restaurant and a dinner for two at The Manor, valued at $50 each. Proceeds from this project support the association’s scholarship fund, which awarded $6,000 to Fitch seniors who graduated in June, and $1,000 in mini grants to teachers who applied for these grants. The winners of this year’s raffle will be announced during half time at the football game at Falcon Stadium on Sept. 22. Tickets can be purchased until half time or by contacting Austintown Alumni Association president Lynn Larson at 330-518-5727.
Boardman Park to host Ace Race disc golf tournament
Whether you are new to disc golf or you are a pro, don’t miss Ace Race 2017, taking place on Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Boardman Park. Each year, disc golfers from around the globe gather at their local disc golf courses for one purpose: to throw aces (a hole in one). Tees are moved up so holes are generally between 100 and 150 feet, making every hole “aceable” and allowing players of all abilities to participate. The entry fee is $40 and includes lunch, two Ace Race discs, that you must use that day, and other disc golf gear. The grand prize will be a disc golf bag along with discs to fill it. Additional prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pin, a putting competition and a 50/50 raffle. Register online at boardmandiscgolf.weebly.com or in the Boardman Park office. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
