Municipal Judge Elizabeth Kobly set bond at $525,000 on Monday for the suspect in the Friday shooting death of a man at a 1172 Verona Ave. home on the East Side.
Kenneth Daniels, 25, of Market Street was arraigned on charges of murder and carrying a concealed weapon in the death of TreVaughn Bell, 24, who was shot about 3 p.m. in the yard and later died at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
Assistant City Prosecutor Jeff Moliterno said Bell told police Daniels shot him. A police dog found Daniels a short distance away, and Daniels had a 9 mm handgun on him, authorities said.
Moliterno said police also found two 9 mm shell casings in the yard where Bell was shot.
When asked, Daniels said he does not have money for a lawyer.
“I’m a convicted felon,” Daniels told the judge. “I can barely eat.”
Daniels has past convictions for resisting arrest and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.
At the crime scene Friday, detectives had a car with Georgia plates that was in the driveway towed to be processed for evidence.
Police also are looking for leads in the death of Ashley Peoples, 26, who was found shot to death about 10 p.m. Friday in the backyard of a vacant 107 E. Glenaven Ave. home on the South Side.
Detectives said a mail carrier spotted the body earlier in the day but thought it was part of a Halloween display. After talking with colleagues, the mail carrier decided to call police and ask them to check.
Officers responded and found the woman’s body.
The two deaths Friday give Youngstown 19 homicides for 2017. In 2016, the city had 18 homicides.
