49ers trade for Jimmy Garoppolo

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly acquired their quarterback of the future by trading for New England backup Jimmy Garoppolo.

ESPN reports Monday that the Niners dealt a 2018 second-round pick to the Patriots for Garoppolo. San Francisco (0-8) had been expected to either draft a quarterback high in the first round next year or try to acquire a proven starter like Kirk Cousins in free agency.

Instead, they decided to strike early and put the fate of their franchise in the hands in a quarterback who has started just two games in four NFL seasons.

Both teams have declined to confirm the trade.

Elliott’s suspension reinstated by judge

NEW YORK

A federal judge has cleared the way for the NFL to enforce a six-game suspension of Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott over domestic violence allegations.

U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla on Monday denied the request for a preliminary injunction from players’ union attorneys working for Elliott.

It’s the second time a federal ruling has overturned a reprieve that kept Elliott on the field, and likely will lead to another effort by for Elliott’s legal team to pursue other remedies.

Elliott attended the roughly two-hour hearing in New York on Monday, a day after rushing for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 33-19 win at Washington.

Cologne fined $70,000 for fan behavior

NYON, Switzerland

UEFA has fined German club Cologne 60,000 euros ($70,000) and ordered the team to pay for damage caused by its fans at Arsenal last month.

Cologne was charged with crowd disturbances, setting off fireworks, throwing objects, and acts of damage at the Emirates Stadium around a Europa League game.

Kickoff was delayed for an hour because of the presence of thousands of ticketless Cologne fans around the London ground, which made it hard for ticketholders to enter.
