Youngstown police announce traffic, parking plans for officer’s funeral
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
City police have announced plans for parking and traffic for slain Girard police officer Justin Leo’s funeral services Sunday at Youngstown State University.
Lt. William Ross of the department’s traffic division said the biggest change in traffic patterns Sunday is that Fifth Avenue will be closed beginning at 10 a.m. from the Service Road to Arlington Street for law- enforcement vehicles only, and will only be one lane in each direction.
Leo’s services are set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Beeghly Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.
Ross said depending on the traffic, the closure of Fifth Avenue may be extended if needed.
People who want to attend the funeral who are not in law enforcement can park at the university’s M70 parking lot, Ross said. Ross said if that lot is full, then the university will make the M63 lot available, and if further parking is needed, then the parking lots at the Covelli Sports Complex will be used.
Ross asked that anyone attending the service access those lots from Grant Street or Ford Avenue.
Leo’s calling hours are set from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Covelli Centre. Ross said he does not anticipate any traffic changes Saturday or parking changes. He said the arena is used for parking people for events with more than 6,000 people.
Leo, killed in the line of duty Saturday night, was shot in the chest, according to a police report released Wednesday. Police had not officially confirmed that Jason Marble, 37, was the man who shot and killed Leo, 31, until the report was released.
The report stated officers responded to a “disturbance possibly involving shots fired” at 408 Indiana Ave. It did not mention how many shots Marble fired at Leo. The report said a second officer returned fire and killed Marble.
