Trick-or-Treat times

The following is listing of trick-or-treating times for the Neighbors coverage areas as submitted to The Vindicator. All trick-or-treating for these areas is taking place on Oct. 31. Local Trick-or-Treat times are: Austintown - 5:30-7:30 p.m., Boardman - 5-7 p.m., Canfield City - 6-8 p.m., Canfield Township - 5:30-7:30 p.m., Poland Township - 5-7 p.m. and Poland Village - 5-7 p.m. Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Barkin’ for Beers

Friends of Fido and Angels for Animals will present the Barkin’ for Beers fundraiser on Oct. 29 from 3-6 p.m. at the Magic Tree Pub and Eatery, located at 7463 South Ave. in Boardman. The event will include six beer tastes and a basket raffle. Tickets are $20. More information can be found online at friendsoffidomahoning.org.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible. On Tuesdays at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place at the Oxford House, located at 30 Benton Road in Salem. This location is handicapped accessible. On Thursdays, a meeting will take place at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, Auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. Gathering Place to honor veterans at meeting

The Gathering Place is honoring veterans from all branches of the service at their monthly meeting on Nov. 13. If you plan to attend, call the church office at 330-533-3531 with your name, address, phone number and the branch of the service where you served before Nov. 6. On that day there will also be an informational program, outlining all of the services available to veterans, some of which you may not be aware of. The meeting will be Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield. Lunch will be served following the program.

Canfield Lions have fish dinner event

The Canfield Lions next fish dinner event will take place on Nov. 3 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Dinners include one main dish from your choice of haddock (baked or fried), macaroni and cheese, haluski or pierogis. You also get your choice of one side from french fries, macaroni and cheese, pierogis or haluski. This includes cole slaw or green beans, a roll, a drink and dessert. The meal costs $11 and take out is available.

Book-a-Librarian offers additional help

If you would like a personal introduction to resources available at the library or need more time with a librarian than you can get over the phone or if you just walk in, this program is for you. Book-a-Librarian sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. A library staff member will give undivided attention to customers who want in-depth help with a variety of library services, such as learning to use a computer, email or the internet; downloading e-books and audiobooks, researching a topic, discovering new books and authors, business, non-profit or genealogy help. Library holiday closing

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Nov. 23 for Thanksgiving.

Pumpkin Carve Our winners announced

Boardman Township Park thanks all the participants who carved pumpkins for its Pumpkin Carve Out Contest. All the pumpkins are on display at the Park through Oct. 31. This year’s winners were, in the preschool division - Aris Lee Garrett (first place), Issa Rafeedie (second place); kindergarten through fourth-grade division - Hunter Davanzo (first place), Spencer Baulo (second place); fifth- through eighth-grade division - Ava Davanzo (first place), Louie Bayo (second place); and ninth-grade through adult - Emily Rutledge and Anne Rutledge (tied for first place) and Amy Rigby (second place). Getting a restful night’s sleep seminar

A Salem area nurse will be visiting the Canfield library on Nov. 15 from 1-2 p.m. to check blood pressure.

Basic computer class offered at the library

Learn very basic computer skills at the Canfield library on Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. This is a beginner’s class that will cover use of a mouse, computer terms and simple internet use. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 330-744-8636 and specify library and Basic Computer Class to register.

Build with Legos

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Nov. 4 at 2:30 p.m. and Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for school aged children who are ages 6 and up.

Get up and move during story time

“Gotta Move Story Time” is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library every Thursday at 10 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Tales and talk offered at the library

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.

Bond with babies and books

Every Thursday at the Canfield library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are ages 6-23 months will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Join the November book club meeting

The Canfield library’s monthly book club, “Off the Shleves,” will be discussing “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles on Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. “Britt-Marie Was here” by Fredrik Backman will be December’s read, and “The Widow” by Fiona Barton will be discussed in January.

Meet historical First Ladies

“Christmas at the White House with the First Ladies” will be performed by the Salem Preservation Society on Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Canfield library. This tea is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC Canfield Committee. Tea and refreshments will be prepared. Tickets are $30 per person, and bring your favorite tea cup. Join a chair yoga class

Mah-Jongg Mondays at the library

Drop in to play Mah-Jongg with others who love the game every Monday during November at the Canfield library. Games begin at 1 p.m. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets are not provided in this program for adults and teens.

Join the Stephen King Constant Readers book club

If you enjoy reading books by Stephen King, the master of suspense, join the Canfield library on Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss his riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers. This month, the group will dive into an informal discussion of “The Gunslinger,” the first installment of King’s magnum opus “The Dark Tower” series, followed by a preview of new and exciting upcoming titles.

Join the Forever Young book club

If you love reading young adult books, join the Canfield library where the group will be reading and discussing a different young adult book every month. November’s meeting with be the 14th at 6:30 p.m. This month, the group will be discussing “Scythe” by Neal Shusterman. This program is for adults.

Pinterest for beginners

Join the Canfield library on Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. in this beginner’s class on how to set up a Pinterest account, search for items (like recipes or craft ideas), create boards and save pins. Basic Microsoft Word class offered at Canfield

Learn very basic computer skills involving the Microsoft Office Word program at the Canfield library on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. This is a beginner’s class for adults that will cover cut and paste and the Word menus. Space is limited, so call 330-744-8636 to register.

Build a clay-bot

Model your own clay-bot on a wind-up walker at the Canfield library on Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. Whether cute, crazy or ghastly, it’s your creation, so go for it. Snacks provided are provided at this program for tweens who are ages 9-12.

Color for grown ups

Join the Canfield library on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze - coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided, along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.

Create luminary mason jars

Join the Canfield library on Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in creating a fall luminary to decorate this holiday season. Supplies will be provided and registration is required for adults and teens. Call 330-744-8636 to register.

Movie night at the library

Join the Canfield library for a Thursday night movie on Nov. 2. at 6 p.m. where the group will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be either PG or PG-13. This program is for adults and teens.

Read to a therapy dog

Read to the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you. This program is the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. and is for children in grades kindergarten and up. The therapy dogs are provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group.

Santa Claus is coming to the library

You’d better not pout on Nov. 25 at 11 a.m. when Santa comes down the book stacks at the Canfield library and listens to every wish. Meet Santa, and afterwards have fun making chocolate-covered pretzels with frosting and sprinkles. Children of all ages can play games and make a craft

Prepare for Kindergarten through play

At Baby Brilliant: Playtime at Your Library, on Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, patrons will read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This Baby Brilliant program is for ages 2-6 and all children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Dress like a pirate for a piratical day

The Canfield library will host a pirate-themed event on Nov. 11 at 10. a.m. Lay anchor for music, games, crafts and snacks. Dress up is encourages for children of all ages.

Hoarding: a simple look at a complex disorder

Molly Suehr and Rachel Cline, trained under the direction of Cory Chalmers, host of A&E’s “Hoarders” TV show will help participants understand hoarding disorder at the Canfield library on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will provide a definition, an idea of the prevalence of hoarders, the varying levels of hoarding and the differing hoarding types. What type of person hoards? You may be surprised. This event is for adults.

Canfield schools partner for hurricane relief collection

The Canfield Local Schools have teamed up with the Canfield Presbyterian Church to make hygiene kits for Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. Collection bins are at C.H. Campbell, Hilltop and Canfield Village Middle School until Oct. 27. Items needed include the following: hand towels (approximately 16 inches x 28 inches, no bath towels or fingertip size), washcloth, wide-tooth comb, nail clipper, bar of soap (bath size in wrapper), toothbrush (in original packaging), Band-Aids Æ or other adhesive bandage strips, one-gallon plastic bags with zipper closure. The church will take care of getting supplies to the disaster struck areas. For questions, contact the church office at 330-533-5509. .

Historical program to be at the library

The Friends of PLYMC Canfield Committee will host this fundraising tea with a performance by the Salem Historical Society, titled “Christmas at the White House with the First Ladies.” The event will take place on Nov. 5 at the Canfield library at 1 p.m. Tea and tea food will be prepared so bring your favorite tea cup. There will be a basket raffle, as well. Tickets are $30 per person. For tickets and reservations, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086.

Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip

The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims

Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.

Halloween family fun flick at the library

Join the Canfield library for a Saturday Movie Matinee on Oct. 28 at 2:30 p.m. A movie-themed snack will be served, however feel free to bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7-years and younger must be with an adult. The movie will be a Halloween-themed DVD, rated PG.

Play Mah-Jongg every Monday at the library

Drop in to play Mah-Jongg with others who love the game every Monday in October from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets will not be provided. This game night is for adults.

Library hosts annual memorial contest

The ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest is running from Oct. 1-31 this year. Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who lost her battle to cancer. The libraries are sponsoring the ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six-word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life—some part of it or all of it—told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Win a tickets to Disney Live at Covelli Center

Go to any PLYMC library to color a picture and enter a drawing to win four tickets (a family pack) to the 5 p.m. on Oct. 29 performance of Disney Live’s “Mickey & Minnie’s Doorway to Magic.” The contest runs from Oct. 2-19. Each library in the system will have its own drawing during regular library hours.

GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
