Trick-or-Treat times

The following is listing of trick-or-treating times for the Neighbors coverage areas as submitted to The Vindicator. All trick-or-treating for these areas is taking place on Oct. 31. Local Trick-or-Treat times are: Austintown - 5:30-7:30 p.m., Boardman - 5-7 p.m., Canfield City - 6-8 p.m., Canfield Township - 5:30-7:30 p.m., Poland Township - 5-7 p.m. and Poland Village - 5-7 p.m. Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Barkin’ for Beers

Friends of Fido and Angels for Animals will present the Barkin’ for Beers fundraiser on Oct. 29 from 3-6 p.m. at the Magic Tree Pub and Eatery, located at 7463 South Ave. in Boardman. The event will include six beer tastes and a basket raffle. Tickets are $20. More information can be found online at friendsoffidomahoning.org.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible. On Tuesdays at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place at the Oxford House, located at 30 Benton Road in Salem. This location is handicapped accessible. BHS marching band performance topped off with cupcakes

The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will perform on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School gymnasium. This annual event is a retrospective of the 2017 marching season. The band will be seated and playing all the music from the field shows while the Spartan Sweethearts and Silks perform their visual routines on the gym floor. Immediately following the concert, audience members will be invited across the hall for a reception where they will be able to sample cupcakes baked, decorated and displayed by teams of band students. Participating students have to create, decorate and present cupcakes that best capture the spirit of this year’s Spartan Marching Band closing routine: “Woodstock – 3 Days of Peace & Music.” A panel of judges will evaluate the entries on taste while all concert-goers will be able to cast their vote on best presentation. Musical selections for the concert will include “Jump In The Line,” “Bruno Mars Medley,” “Van Halen Medley,” “Sh-Boom,” “In The Stone” and more. Admission to the concert is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Senior citizens are admitted free of charge to all Boardman band events.

Book-a-Librarian sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. Library holiday closing

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Nov. 23 for Thanksgiving.

Pumpkin Carve Out winners announced

Boardman Township Park thanks all the participants who carved pumpkins for its Pumpkin Carve Out Contest. All the pumpkins are on display at the Park through Oct. 31. This year’s winners were, in the preschool division - Aris Lee Garrett (first place), Issa Rafeedie (second place); kindergarten through fourth-grade division - Hunter Davanzo (first place), Spencer Baulo (second place); fifth- through eighth-grade division - Ava Davanzo (first place), Louie Bayo (second place); and ninth-grade through adult - Emily Rutledge and Anne Rutledge (tied for first place) and Amy Rigby (second place). Getting a restful night’s sleep seminar

St. Charles Knights of Columbus to host spaghetti dinner

St. Charles Knights of Columbus, located at 7345 Westview Drive and State Route 224 in Boardman, will host a spaghetti dinner in Fr. Haidet Hall on Oct. 29 from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. The menu of pasta and meatballs will cost $8 per adult. There will be special children’s rates. All dinners include salad, cake, bread and butter, and a beverage. Carry out orders will be available starting at 10:30 a.m. You can bring your own containers, or the group will provide them. A basket raffle and 50/50 raffle will also be conducted.

Celebration at Westminster Presbyterian Church

The Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan is a Scottish-American ceremony that celebrates family heritage of the descendants of Scottish immigrants to the United States and Canada. The Kirkin’ is a service to present family tartans to the church and to celebrate the importance of faith and the church to the Scottish-American community and all families of the Kirk. During a Kirkin’, a display of family tartans is presented for blessing. The first Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan in the United States took place on April 27, 1941. The service was conducted by Scottish-born Chaplain of the U.S. Senate and Minister of New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., Dr. Peter Marshall. This tradition of the Kirkin’ has evolved into a colorful, festive occasion for celebrating our Presbyterian roots. A creative blend of Scottish bagpipe music, hymns and prayers are featured in this worship service on Oct. 29. Special blessings will be given to the clans represented by the church’s members, and plaid clan banners will be displayed.

Mahoning County Red Cross visits the library

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross, which proudly serves the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital, at the Boardman library on Nov. 24 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will be at the Boardman library on Nov. 6 from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Tales and talk offered at the library

Join the Boardman library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.

Bond with babies and books

Every Tuesday at the Boardman library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Listen to presentation with Jessie McClain

The Friends of the Boardman library will present “The Power of Words and the Holocaust” with Jessie McClain on Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. This program is for adults.

Local authors to meet at the library

Meet local authors and have a book signed. This meet-and-greet and book-signing for local authors will take place on Nov. 30, from 6-8 p.m. at the Boardman library. Authors interested in participating should call the Development Office at 330-740-6086. This event is free and open to the public.

Writing from Life: Question Me workshop offered at the library

On Nov. 28 at 10. a.m. at the Boardman library, learn to use the interview format as a way to invoke stories. Have you ever had a terrible haircut? What would you say to a young person whose heart is freshly broken? The group will use questions like these as a way into intriguing story writing. Join the Reader’s Choice book club

This adult book club will meet on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. The discussion will be about “Hidden Figures” by Margot Lee Shetterly. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published. The group will preview December’s book, “After the Fall” by Noah Hawley.

Create fun and fashionable jewelry from beads and safety pin at the Boardman library on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. This programs is offered for tweens and teens.

Join an introduction to proposal writing workshop

This newly revised class will provide you with an overview of how to write a standard project proposal to a foundation at the Boardman library on Nov. 4 at 9:30 a.m. It will include: the basic elements of a proposal; the “do’s” and “don’ts” of writing and submitting a proposal; and how to follow up, whether the answer is yes or no. This program is offered for adults.

Explore the records of the armed forces

Join the Boardman library on Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. for “Leave No Soldier Behind: Finding Our Family Members in Uniform.” Learn how to pursue personnel files and unit histories in order to understand your ancestor’s role in defending this nation’s heritage in this program for teens and adults.

Join a rag rug project at the library

Bring in your crochet, knitting or anything with yarn project and learn from one another at the Boardman library on Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. Watch a rag rug demonstration as they cut old T-shirts and make yarn from fabric. Supplies needed to make a rag rug include: 4-6 old T-shirts or 2-3 yards of cotton fabric, sewing scissors, size I or J crochet hook, and a yard stick.

Join the teen advisory board meeting

The Teen Avdisory Board meeting takes place on the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library at 6:30 p.m. Help plan and support teen activities at the library, meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome, and snacks and refreshments will be provided for teens in grades 7-12.

Learn the science of sports

Join the Boardman library and learn the science behind some of your favorite sports on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. There may be running, jumping or throwing involved. This program is for children of all ages, and pre-school children must be accompanied by an adult.

Prepare for Kindergarten through play

At the Baby Brilliant: Playtime at Your Library program on Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library, patrons will read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This Baby Brilliant program is for children who are ages 2-6 and all children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

“Brown Bear, Brown Bear” celebrates it’s 50th anniversary

Celebrate National Picture Book Month and the 50th Anniversary of the beloved classic “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle on Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Boardman library. Enjoy activity stations and a snack. This celebration is for children of all ages.

Learn the history of cinema at the Boardman library

Nov. 7, Urban explorer and historian Sean T. Posey traces the evolution of modern cinema through the rich local history of the Mahoning Valley at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Books will be available for sale and no reservations will be needed.

Cardinal Mooney to host open house

On Oct. 29, from 1-4 p.m., Cardinal Mooney will host a free, public open house at the school, located at 2545 Erie Street in Youngstown. Prospective and current families will be treated to school tours hosted by current students and retired faculty. Alumni will be on hand to share their experiences at Mooney. Information sessions to take place include: financial assistance and scholarship, curriculum and Catholic identity. Academic departments, sports teams and extracurricular clubs will have information on hand. Light refreshments will be provided. Boardman YMCA to be location for art show

The Davis Family YMCA is hosting its fifth annual “But I Know What I Like” art show from Oct. 8 until Nov. 19 at the McClurg Road YMCA in Boardman. The opening reception, which is free and open to the community, will take place on Oct. 8 from 1-3 p.m. Entry is open to all adult artists, amateur and professional, living within a 40 mile radius of the Y. This year, 91 artists submitted 216 pieces which are hung throughout the building. Three lay people were invited to judge, in keeping with the theme, “I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like.” More than $700 in prizes will be awarded at the opening. Voting for People’s Choice is open from Oct. 8-31, three votes for $1. All proceeds from the show benefit the John Patterson Memorial Scholarship for adults with disabilities who show promise in visual art.

Blood drive to be at the library

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive to benefit the community at the Boardman library on Oct. 31 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. To donate, call 1-800-733-2767 for an appointment, The Mahoning Chapter proudly serves the needs of St. Elizabeth hospital.

Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip

The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims

Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.

Library hosts annual memorial contest

The ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest is running from Oct. 1-31 this year. Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who lost her battle to cancer. The libraries are sponsoring the ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six-word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life—some part of it or all of it—told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Win a tickets to Disney Live at Covelli Center

Go to any PLYMC library to color a picture and enter a drawing to win four tickets (a family pack) to the 5 p.m. on Oct. 29 performance of Disney Live’s “Mickey & Minnie’s Doorway to Magic.” The contest runs from Oct. 2-19. Each library in the system will have its own drawing during regular library hours.

GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
