Trick-or-Treat times

The following is listing of trick-or-treating times for the Neighbors coverage areas as submitted to The Vindicator. All trick-or-treating for these areas is taking place on Oct. 31. Local Trick-or-Treat times are: Austintown - 5:30-7:30 p.m., Boardman - 5-7 p.m., Canfield City - 6-8 p.m., Canfield Township - 5:30-7:30 p.m., Poland Township - 5-7 p.m. and Poland Village - 5-7 p.m. Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Barkin’ for Beers

Friends of Fido and Angels for Animals will present the Barkin’ for Beers fundraiser on Oct. 29 from 3-6 p.m. at the Magic Tree Pub and Eatery, located at 7463 South Ave. in Boardman. The event will include six beer tastes and a basket raffle. Tickets are $20. More information can be found online at friendsoffidomahoning.org.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible. On Tuesdays at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place at the Oxford House, located at 30 Benton Road in Salem. This location is handicapped accessible. Book-a-Librarian

If you would like a personal introduction to resources available at the library or need more time with a librarian than you can get over the phone or if you just walk in, this program is for you. Book-a-Librarian sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. Pumpkin winners

Boardman Township Park thanks all the participants who carved pumpkins for its Pumpkin Carve Out Contest. The pumpkins are on display at the Park through Oct. 31. This year’s winners were, in the preschool division - Aris Lee Garrett (first place), Issa Rafeedie (second place); kindergarten through fourth-grade division - Hunter Davanzo (first place), Spencer Baulo (second place); fifth- through eighth-grade division - Ava Davanzo (first place), Louie Bayo (second place); and ninth-grade through adult - Emily Rutledge and Anne Rutledge (tied for first place) and Amy Rigby (second place). Getting a restful night’s sleep seminar

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center in Boardman will be hosting a free natural health seminar titled, “Getting a Restful Night’s Sleep,” on Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. If you have ever found yourself frustrated and awake in the middle of the night, asking, “why can’t I sleep,” you’re not alone. Local church hosts sale fundraiser

Grace Lutheran Church, located at 162 South Raccoon Road in Austintown, will host its annual fall sale on Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The sale will include miscellaneous household items, clothing, baked goods and food will be available for purchase. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., clothing will be sold for $1 per bag and all merchandise will be sold at half price. All proceeds from the sale will be used to support local charities and the church’s women’s programs.

Mahoning County Red Cross visits the library

Blood Drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross, which proudly serves the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital, will be taking blood donations to help the local community be at the Austintown library on Nov. 18 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. and again on Nov. 28 from 1-6p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Library holiday closing

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Nov. 23 for Thanksgiving.

Swap coupons at the library

Do you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have? Drop in during library hours to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons.

Basic computer class offered at the library

Learn very basic computer skills at the Austintown library on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. This is a beginner’s class that will cover use of a mouse, computer terms and simple internet use. Stamp with Cindy

Learn to create your own handmade cards using stamps, punches and other fun tools at the Austintown library on Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. and Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. Sign up to create each month’s greeting card with matching envelope. Get up and move during story time

“Gotta Move Story Time” is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Tales and talk offered at the library

Join the Austintown library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.

Bond with babies and books

Every Tuesday at the Austintown library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Share an act of kindness

Write a sentence letting the library know what nice thing you’ve done. This event is for school-age children at the Austintown library during regular library hours throughout the month of November.

Join a discussion about philosophy

Join the Austintown library on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. for the monthly Socrates Caf ’ Philosophy Group.

Retired Navy Captain shares stories

Join the Austintown library in an “Honoring Our Veterans” program on Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. United States Armed Forces retired Navy Captain Nick Pacalo of North Lima will share stories about his 25 years as a Navy Pilot in Vietnam and the Cold War. A meeting will follow this presentation for adults.

...And the Rest is History book club to meet

The Austintown library is hosting lively discussions of readings in history and historical fiction on Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. There are no assigned titles for this adult program. Pick a subject that sparks your interest and share your thoughts on your selection. All areas of history and historical fiction are welcome.

Sip tea and discuss mysteries

Adults can join the Austintown library on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. to drink tea and discuss your latest mystery novel find.

Turn the page at this book club

Hear what others are reading and share your favorite read at the Austintown library on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. Come in and join the fun. This meeting is for adults.

Chapter Chat book club to meet at the library

Come to the Chapter Chat Book Club where the group will be reading and discussing a book together every month. The November meeting will take place on Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. Each month will be a new genre. Call the Austintown library at 330-744-8636 to find out this month’s read. Pinterest for Beginners at the Austintown library

If you want to declutter, get rid of your papers and print outs and keep all your ideas and recipes online. Learn how on Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Learn how to make a Pinterest account, create boards and save your pins. Bring your smart phone, tablet or laptop if you have one.

Paper crafting corner at the library

Join the Austintown library every month to learn how to create a different paper craft. November’s adult program will be on the 17th at 11 a.m., and registration is required.

Create a DIY dog toy

You will have the option of keeping the toy or donating one to a dog in need, or making two toys, one to make and one to take. Space is limited and registration is required for this event at the Austintown library on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. Call 330-744-8636 to register for adults and teens.

Create grab and go craft

Children of all ages can create a craft during regular library hours to take home with them during the month of November.

Guess the picture book

During library hours, guess the picture book from the cut up cover for children of all ages. One winner will be chosen at random from correct entries.

Join movie night at the library

Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie at the Austintown library on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Advanced social media workshop provided at the library

The class will go over top examples of using social media to market to an audience on Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. It is recommended that you know how to use and set-up a business account on Facebook before you attend this workshop. Play strategy board games at the library

Go to the Austintown library on Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. to play games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served at this program for adults and teens.

This workshop on Nov. 13 at the Austintown library at 6:30 p.m. will feature ways to set-up a Facebook page for your business. Learn to create a page, look at top rated model examples and apply your mind to use Facebook in a way that is best for you. Learn the basics of Twitter and YouTube to help start or grow your business at the Austintown library on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. This workshop will specifically feature steps to create a Twitter account for your business and to create a YouTube account for your business. Read to therapy dog Reese

On the second Saturday of each month, go to the Austintown library and read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners. The program begins at 11 a.m. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Registration is required as space is limited. Join the library for pre-k story time

Baby Brilliant: Pre-Kindergarten Story Time will take place every Wednesday in November at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library. This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. They will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help childen get ready for kindergarten.

Prepare for Kindergarten through play

At Baby Brilliant: Playtime at Your Library on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library, patrons will read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This Baby Brilliant program is for children who are ages 2-6 and all children under seven must be accompanied by an adult

Family game day at the library

If school is out and there’s nothing to do, join the Austintown library for family game day on Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The library will have everything for you and your family to enjoy together including: board games, giant games, video games and even a basketball game. This event is fun for the whole family.

Join a fall scavenger hunt

Find all the pictures hidden in the children’s section of the library and show it to a librarian for a prize during regular library hours. The scavenger hunt is for children in grades kindergarten through sixth grade.

Hoarding: a simple look at a complex disorder

Molly Suehr and Rachel Cline, trained under the direction of Cory Chalmers, host of A&E’s “Hoarders” TV show will help participants understand hoarding disorder at the Austintown library on Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. The presentation will provide a definition, an idea of the prevalence of hoarders, the varying levels of hoarding and the differing hoarding types. What type of person hoards? You may be surprised. This event is for adults.

Learn the history of the cinema

On Nov. 4, Urban explorer and historian Sean T. Posey will trace the evolution of modern cinema through the rich local history of the Mahoning Valley. Event begins at 11 a.m. at the Austintown library. Books will be available for sale and no reservations will be needed.

Veteran’s concert and chili cook off coming in November

Austintown Board of Education and Austintown Fitch bands will host the sixth annual Veteran’s Concert and Chili Cook-Off on Nov. 12. The Chili Cook-Off will be from 2-4 p.m. in the Fitch Cafeteria with performances by the Fitch concert choir. The band concert will begin at 5 p.m. in the high school gymnasium and will feature close to 400 Austintown students from Austintown Middle and Fitch High School, making the performance one of of the largest veteran salutes in the area. Austintown Middle School sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade bands are under the direction of Jeremy McClaine, and the Fitch High School Marching Band is under the direction of Wes O’Connor. Admission for dinner and the concert is $10 for adults and $5 for children/seniors. Concert only is $5 for adults and $3 children. Admission for just the concert is free for seniors and veterans.

Local Dairy Queens to host pumpkin hunt

On Oct. 28 at noon, the Austintown Dairy Queen, located at 146 North Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, will host a free pumpkin hunt, costume contest and pumpkin decorating. There will be candy, prizes and mini pumpkins, as well as the $5 lunch that includes a dessert before the hunt. Children ages 2-6 may choose to hang their decorations or take them home.

Coffee and conversation with superintendent

Austintown Superintendent Vincent Colaluca will be hosting his second “Coffee and Conversation with the Superintendent” event on Nov. 8 at the Austintown Perkins on Interstate Boulevard. Coffee and Conversation will allow community members to meet Colaluca, have face to face interaction and ask questions based on that month’s topic. Those who are unable to attend will be able to listen in via Facebook Live and DRUND Live. November’s topic will be the Local Report Card. Coffee and Conversation takes place every other month at various locations around the Austintown community.

Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip

The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims

Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.

Library hosts annual memorial contest

The ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest is running from Oct. 1-31 this year. Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who lost her battle to cancer. The libraries are sponsoring the ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six-word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life—some part of it or all of it—told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Fitch orchestra in need of instrument donations

The Fitch High School orchestra program is asking the community for instrument donations for students unable to rent or buy their own. Orchestra Instructor Sara Eliser said she is specifically looking for violins, violas, cellos and double basses to grow the orchestra program. All donations can be brought to Fitch High School and would be greatly appreciated by the students of the program.

Solve a murder mystery at the library

“Real Murders” are occurring at the library. The latest is the murder of Charlaine Schulz. “Last Scene Alive” at “the Julius House” and later found dead at the Austintown library. Someone clearly had “a Bone to Pick” with her, but who? Prizes awarded to the Best Guess and Best Dressed, so put on your thinking caps and “Teagarden” party hats. Registration is required. (Knowledge of the Aurora Teagarden Mystery books is not necessary; all information needed to solve the crime will be provided). This event is for adults and will take place on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.

GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
