Alaska rescue group takes in alligator that outgrew bathtub
WASILLA, Alaska
It was an odd day for one Alaska animal-control officer who took a call about an alligator outgrowing its bathtub.
KTUU-TV reported that a Wasilla resident called 911 last week after realizing that the more than 4-foot-long alligator named Allie couldn’t live in a tub anymore.
Rescue group Valley Aquatics took Allie in. Valley Aquatics owner Sheridan Perkins says Allie is a 3-year-old American alligator.
Perkins says she has thought about re-homing Allie in Florida.
The alligator is Wasilla’s second run-in this year with a large reptile. In May, a 17-foot python named Sam went missing for several days before reappearing in his home’s living room. He returned through the door his owner left open for him.
Police video shows large bear peering into shop windows
KINGS BEACH, Calif.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office posted video on its Facebook page of a four-pawed prowler early Oct. 18.
In it, Deputy Don Nevins shines his car’s spotlight on a bear and shouts, “Hey, big boy!” before warning it against breaking into any of the shops it’s sniffing around.
Shortly after, the bear darts in front of his patrol car and off into a park.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Dena Erwin says deputies respond to bear calls every day because they break into cars, homes and businesses.
She said right now they are preparing for hibernation, so they’re upping their calorie intake.
University president’s hot sauces benefit scholarship fund
GLASSBORO, N.J.
The president of a New Jersey university is using his culinary skills and his hot sauces to help raise money for student scholarships.
Rowan University president Ali Houshmand has been making hot sauces for years. He began doing it in his free time, providing the sauces to family and friends. In recent years he’s been selling his sauces online and on campus.
He’s been working with experts at the Rutgers Food Innovation Center and turning the various peppers he grows in a garden at Rowan’s South Jersey Technology Park into three types of hot sauce. All proceeds from the sauce sales go to Rowan’s Student Scholarship Fund.
The three sauces are Ali’s Nasty, Nasty-licious and Nasty-vicious.
