Man sentenced in aggravated murder

WARREN

Douglas S. Day, 24, of Mesopotamia Township was sentenced to 23 years to life in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder in the April 25 wounding of his former girlfriend and murder of her mother.

His sentence was handed down by Judge Peter Kontos of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Day injured former girlfriend Tiffany Lambert, 26, and killed Cathryn Lambert, 48, of Stow near the home Day and Lambert shared on state Route 87 near state Route 534. Police say Day killed Cathryn Lambert with a gunshot to the neck. Investigators said Cathryn Lambert was picking up Tiffany after Tiffany and Day had an argument. The shootings occurred about 11:35 p.m. Day was arrested at his mother’s house in Roaming Shores, Ashtabula County, a few hours after the shootings.

Program aims to stop domestic violence

YOUNGSTOWN

The city’s Community Initiative to Reduce Violence program had a session urging participants to not commit domestic violence.

The five men who attended Wednesday’s event in city council chambers haven’t been charged with domestic violence, but police have been called to their houses for potential problems, said city Prosecutor Dana Lantz.

“The goal is prevention versus prosecution,” she said. “If we can reach one or two of them, it’s an accomplishment.”

Law-enforcement officials spoke to the men about not escalating their issues into domestic violence while social-service agency representatives offered assistance, including counseling, to them.

Hurricane relief

YOUNGSTOWN

Two tractor-trailers left Wednesday to bring donations from the Youngstown area for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.

The trucks picked up the donations from Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, 2805 Salt Springs Road.

“It’s just been a lot of collaboration with places in the community,” said Amanda Russo, the pastor’s assistant at New Life Church. “I know that a lot of families in Youngstown are from Puerto Rico, and I know a lot of their families are affected that are still in Puerto Rico.”

About 8,500 pounds of donations were gathered in a month to be sent to the island nation devastated by Hurricane Maria last month.

Convoy of Hope, with assistance from Chatham Emergency Management Agency, picked up the truckload of donations.
