Eagles lose Jason Peters, Jordan Hicks

PHILADELPHIA

Eagles coach Doug Pederson says nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters and starting linebacker Jordan Hicks will miss the rest of the season after being injured in Monday’s 34-24 win over Washington.

Peters tore his right ACL and MCL and Hicks ruptured his right Achilles’ tendon. Those are two big losses for the NFL-leading Eagles (6-1).

Halapoulivaati Vaitai takes Peters’ spot. Najee Goode and Joe Walker filled in for Hicks against the Redskins.

Peters has anchored Philadelphia’s offensive line for a decade. He’s a team leader and teammates showed their respect by surrounding the cart before it took him off the field.

Hicks is a top playmaker on defense. He has seven interceptions and five fumble recoveries in 31 games.

Raiders’ Lynch loses

appeal of suspension

ALAMEDA, Calif.

Marshawn Lynch’s appeal of his one-game suspension for shoving an official was denied Tuesday and the running back will miss Oakland’s game this week at Buffalo.

Appeals officer James Thrash, who was appointed jointly by the league and the NFLPA, upheld the one-game ban without pay.

Lynch will not be allowed to be with the Raiders until Oct. 30.

Lynch was suspended for coming off the sideline during a scuffle in the second quarter and then shoving a game official during Oakland’s 31-30 victory over Kansas City last Thursday night. The ban will cost him more than $100,000 in salary and per game roster bonuses.

Seahawks sign veteran DE Dwight Freeney

RENTON, Wash.

Veteran defensive end Dwight Freeney is back in the NFL after agreeing to a deal to join the Seattle Seahawks.

The Seahawks announced they had agreed to terms on a deal with Freeney on Tuesday night after bringing him in for a visit earlier in the day. The 37-year-old has been without a job after spending last season with Atlanta.

Freeney will have a specific role as a pass rusher with the Seahawks, adding depth after defensive end Cliff Avril was placed on injured reserve last week with a neck injury. Seattle played last week against the New York Giants with just 52 players on its roster.

Last year with the Falcons, Freeney appeared in 15 regular season games and had three sacks. He started two of Atlanta’s three playoff games.

Freeney spent 11 seasons with Indianapolis, where he was a three-time All-Pro.

Rays hire Indians’ assistant Quatraro

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.

Matt Quatraro is the new third base coach for the Tampa Bay Rays.

The team announced the addition to manager Kevin Cash’s staff on Tuesday.

Quatraro takes over the job held the past three seasons by Charlie Montoyo, who recently was promoted to bench coach.

Quatraro is a former player, coach and manager in the Rays’ minor league system. He spent the past four seasons working for the Cleveland Indians as major league assistant hitting coach.

Mike Leach pressuring Texas Tech for pay

Washington State coach Mike Leach is making a big push to get Texas Tech to pay him some $2.5 million that Leach feels he is owed for the 2009 season.

Leach has hired a private investigator to seek information about Texas Tech’s leadership and its decision to fire him in 2009 as a result of a controversy involving player Adam James, who said he was placed in a darkened closet while trying to recover from a concussion. Investigator Wayne Dolcefino of Houston is supposed to dig up information on school officials, including phone and other records.

“Their smart play is to pay the man,” Dolcefino said.

Leach has also launched a website called paycoachleach.com to build public support for his cause.
