Fifarek set to take over library position

YOUNGSTOWN

Aimee Fifarek of Phoenix completed the requirements to become the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County’s next executive director.

The board voted to offer her the position Oct. 17 contingent upon her accepting and passing a background check and drug screen.

Library officials expect Fifarek, who currently serves as deputy director of information technology and digital initiatives for Phoenix Public Library, to begin as executive director no later than Jan. 8, 2018, with a starting salary of $110,000.

Aircraft crash disaster exercise

VIENNA

The 910th Airlift Wing and the American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley will stage an aircraft crash disaster exercise at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station at 3 p.m. Thursday. The event will include a simulated crash, which members of the 910th will work to contain while workers from the Red Cross administer care and provide comfort to crash “victims.”

The crash is part of the Air Force Community Partnership Program at the YARS.

Opening statements delayed in trial

YOUNGSTOWN

Opening statements Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for the last of three men charged with a November 2015 shooting death were delayed because a juror failed to report to court.

Judge Lou D’Apolito delayed the trial for a day to see if the juror could be found. It is hoped the trial can begin today.

Jawonn Hymes, 26, is accused of the shooting death of Thomas Owens of Burbank Avenue. Owens was shot and killed as he sat in a parked car on West Hylda Avenue on the South Side. Two other men have been convicted and are serving lengthy prison sentences.

Candidates forum

POLAND

Candidates for Poland school board, village council and township trustee will participate in a forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at Poland Seminary High School, 3199 Dobbins Road. The Town One Range One organization is sponsoring the event.
