Trustees honor fallen law and safety enforcement officials

AUSTINTOWN

Township trustees started Monday’s meeting with a moment of silence for a Girard police officer and Youngstown firefighter who died last week.

The trustees recognized Girard police officer Justin Leo, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Saturday evening, and Battalion Chief Ronald Russo of the Youngstown Fire Department, who died after a motorcycle crash Friday in Ashtabula County.

Trustees also agreed to move $125,000 from the township’s general fund to the communications division, and $75,000 from the general fund to the zoning department.

“That’s just us transferring money back and forth,” Trustee Jim Davis said. “We’re putting it in there until revenue comes in, and then we put it back.”

Parks Supervisor Todd Shaffer reported students from Austintown Fitch High School finished painting a mural on the outside wall of the splash pad at Township Park, 6000 Kirk Road.
