United Way to host ‘Taste of the Town’

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The United Way of Lawrence County will host its 14th annual “Taste of the Town” from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the New Englander Banquet Center, 3009 Wilmington Road. Chairwoman for the event is Joanne Preston of Preston Auto Group.

The Lawrence County Career and Technical Center culinary students will assist restaurants to show their skills. Restaurants participating include Crane Room Grille, Faraone Brothers, The Grill on the Hill, Mary’s Restaurant, Medure’s Catering and more.

Door prizes include gift certificates and items from local businesses as well as a Pittsburgh Steelers autographed football by T.J. Watt, No. 90. Proceeds will benefit the Lawrence County United Way Campaign. For information, contact the United Way office at 724-658-8528 or www.uwlawcty.org.

Potential Development will host open house

YOUNGSTOWN

Potential Development Schools for Students with Autism will host an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at 2400 Market St., the new location for its elementary and middle school. The building is across the street from the Potential Development High School.

The event is open to the public. Potential Development acquired the building from Anthem after being awarded a $500,000 grant from the Youngstown Foundation’s Hine Memorial Fund.

Tours of all three buildings will be available during the open house. Brighter Futures Marketplace, a retail store providing job skills for the students, will be open.

It’s Red Ribbon Week at Jackson-Milton

Red Ribbon Week, dedicated to talking to kids about drug prevention and making healthy choices, will run from today through Oct. 31 at Jackson-Milton Elementary School.

“Your Future Is Key, So Stay Drug Free,” is the national theme for Red Ribbon Week. JMES is making Red Ribbon Week fun and interactive for students. The Jackson-Milton School’s D.A.R.E. officer also will participate.

YSU professor selected for annual seminar

Professor Max Grubb of Youngstown State University has been selected to participate in the Television Academy Foundation’s 2017 Faculty Seminar Program.

The faculty fellows will gain the latest information on the television and content development industries from top entertainment professionals during a week-long Southern California seminar from Nov. 6-10.

The seminar will include panel discussions with broadcast and cable networks’ programming and scheduling executives, legal experts and content creators.

Living Theatre to work with Mount Union

The University of Mount Union will host Living Theatre for four days at the end of October when the group presents “A Day in the Life,” as the University’s Eckler Lecture for the 2017-18 academic year. The Living Theatre is an American theatre company founded in 1947 and based in New York City. It is the oldest experimental theater group in the United States.

For this year’s Eckler lecture, the theatre department is announcing a residency by the Living Theatre Workshop. Co-founders of the workshop, Lois Kagan Mingus and Jerry Goralnick, will be in residence on the Mount Union campus from Thursday through Sunday. The workshop leaders will work with interested Mount Union students to create a performance piece entitled “A Day in the Life of the City” at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the Gallaher Black Box Theatre.

The Mary W. and Eric A. Eckler Endowment in Literature and Drama was established in 1981 through an endowment given by Mr. John A. and Mrs. Dorothy (Nelson ’29) Cummins. The Ecklers were longtime faculty members in the department of education at Mount Union.
