Local church to offer chicken dinners
Drive through chicken dinners will be offered at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on Oct. 26 from 3-6 p.m. They will consist of chicken parmesan, spaghetti, three bean salad, roll and butter, and cake. The cost is $9 per dinner (cash only), and the proceeds will help with ministry expenses. Each customer will get $1 off the purchase price if they bring a can of vegetables that will be donated to the needy via the Rescue Mission or some other worthwhile organization. Dress like a pirate for a piratical day
The Canfield library will host a pirate-themed event on Nov. 11 at 10. a.m. Lay anchor for music, games, crafts and snacks. Dress up is encourages for children of all ages.
Hoarding: a simple look at a complex disorder
Molly Suehr and Rachel Cline, trained under the direction of Cory Chalmers, host of A&E’s “Hoarders” TV show will help participants understand hoarding disorder at the Canfield library on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will provide a definition, an idea of the prevalence of hoarders, the varying levels of hoarding and the differing hoarding types. What type of person hoards? You may be surprised. This event is for adults.
Canfield schools partner for hurricane relief collection
The Canfield Local Schools have teamed up with the Canfield Presbyterian Church to make hygiene kits for Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. Collection bins are at C.H. Campbell, Hilltop and Canfield Village Middle School until Oct. 27. Items needed include the following: hand towels (approximately 16 inches x 28 inches, no bath towels or fingertip size), washcloth, wide-tooth comb, nail clipper, bar of soap (bath size in wrapper), toothbrush (in original packaging), Band-Aids Æ or other adhesive bandage strips, one-gallon plastic bags with zipper closure. Local Dairy Queens to host pumpkin hunt
On Oct. 28 at noon, the Cornersburg Dairy Queen, located at 3555 S. Meridian Road in Cornersburg, will host a free pumpkin hunt, costume contest and pumpkin decorating. There will be candy, prizes and mini pumpkins, as well as the $5 lunch that includes a dessert before the hunt. Children ages 2-6 may choose to hang their decorations or take them home.
Canfield Presbyterian Church to host Trunk or Treat
There will be a free to the public Trunk or Treat event at Canfield Presbyterian Church on Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m., including Biblical carnival games, dinner and trick-or-treating from car to car in the church parking lot. Learn about nocturnal animals at the library
Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Creatures of the Night” at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Canfield library. Mike Johnson, Chief of Natural and Cultural Resource Management at Summit Metro Parks, will present an overview of three wildlife programs that focus on some of the region’s nocturnal animals – bats, owls and coyotes. Learn about some of their unique finds and the many challenges this group of animals faces, including how coyotes are studied and how coyotes study you.
Local newcomers group to meet
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on Oct. 25 at Caf Augustine in the Newport library at, located at 3730 Market Street. There will be a select menu and hostesses are Pat Marshall and Jean Callahan. The program will be a talk by Traci Manning of the Ohio Historical Society. She will speak on clothing styles in the past of Mahoning County. The social gathering is at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Historical program to be at the library
The Friends of PLYMC Canfield Committee will host this fundraising tea with a performance by the Salem Historical Society, titled “Christmas at the White House with the First Ladies.” The event will take place on Nov. 5 at the Canfield library at 1 p.m. Tea and tea food will be prepared so bring your favorite tea cup. Halloween family fun flick at the library
Join the Canfield library for a Saturday Movie Matinee on Oct. 28 at 2:30 p.m. A movie-themed snack will be served, however feel free to bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7-years and younger must be with an adult. The movie will be a Halloween-themed DVD, rated PG.
Cardinal Mooney High School Minority Alumni Council announces reunion weekend
The CMHS Minority Alumni Council recently announced the inaugural MAC All-Class Reunion, which will take place throughout the weekend of Oct. 20-22. The MAC invites all Cardinal Mooney alumni to join in the three-day celebration, which will feature a variety of activities and opportunities to visit with old friends, meet new ones and reconnect with the Mooney Family. All funds raised during the reunion weekend will be used by the MAC’s Scholarship Fund, which directly benefits deserving CMHS students by providing money for athletic and academic fees, tuition assistance, college textbooks and more. The weekend will kick off on Oct. 20 with a casual tailgating event leading up to the Mooney versus Ursuline homecoming game. On Oct. 21, reunion attendees are invited to visit CMHS early in the day for tours. In the evening, alumni will join together at the MAC Scholarship Gala to socialize and network while enjoying upscale dining, cocktails and dancing. On Oct. 22, the weekend will close with the Minority Alumni Council’s Annual Meeting and a Farewell Brunch. Tickets are available now, and can be purchased by visiting CMHSMinorityAlumni.com/Events. Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip
The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims
Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.

Library hosts annual memorial contest
The ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest is running from Oct. 1-31 this year. Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who lost her battle to cancer. The libraries are sponsoring the ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six-word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life—some part of it or all of it—told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
Build a robot at the library

Gotta Move Story Time is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Take your tot to Tales and Talk
Join the program Baby Brilliant for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. The program takes place every Tuesday at the Canfield library at 10 a.m.
Bond with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for babies and will take place at the Canfield library every Thursday in October at 10 a.m.
Win a tickets to Disney Live at Covelli Center
Go to any PLYMC library to color a picture and enter a drawing to win four tickets (a family pack) to the 5 p.m. on Oct. 29 performance of Disney Live’s “Mickey & Minnie’s Doorway to Magic.” The contest runs from Oct. 2-19. Each library in the system will have its own drawing during regular library hours.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
