AUSTINTOWN

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Cleveland Democrat, backed National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Monday at the Austintown Police Department.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day, on Oct. 28, is a program started by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency encouraging people to drop off their unused or out-of-date drugs at designated sites.

Township police began participating in drug take-backs in 2009, and it’s had a drug drop-off box in its lobby since 2011.

Jeff Toth, Austintown detective and Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer, said drug drop-offs keep leftover prescription drugs out of children’s hands.

Brown said this is another step to combat the state’s opioid epidemic.

The DEA will seize and destroy drugs dropped off at National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

On Oct. 28, drugs can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at these locations: Austintown Police Department, 92 Ohltown Road; Youngstown State University Police, 266 W. Wood St.; Liberty Township Government Building, 1315 Church Hill-Hubbard Road; Boardman Police Department, 8299 Market St.; Hubbard City Police Department, 233 School St.; Beaver Township Police Department, 601 W. South Range Road, North Lima; Canfield Police Department, 104 Lisbon St.; New Middletown Police Department, 10711 Main St.; Cortland Police Department, 400 N.
