Retired Attorney Dean F. Ferris was honored recently with a dinner at Rachel’s Restaurant in Austintown for 62 years of service as a member of the Austintown Optimist Club. Along with his family, attendees included fellow Optimist and Immediate Past Ohio District Optimist Governor Cherie Gentry and Austintown trustee, Ken Carano, event co-chairman. In August, Ferris was recognized at an area Optimist Zone meeting for his 90th birthday.
Friends of river to meet Monday

The Friends of the Mahoning River will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Oak Hill Collaborative, 507 Oak Hill. Parking is in the rear of the building.
The featured speaker is Lindsey Hahn, an instructor of adaptive sports for the Breckenridge Outdoor Recreation Center in Breckenridge. Hahn teaches kayaking, climbing, skiing and bicycling.
Plans are being made for a Friends paddle on the Mahoning River. All are welcome who share the mission of advocating the quality of the Mahoning River. For more information, contact Patricia Dunbar at 330-719-2337.
Chocolate and dessert festival to return

The Rotary Club of Warren’s 13th annual Chocolate and Dessert Festival will take place Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Demetrios Banquet Center, 3223 Atlantic Street, NE. The event includes chocolate items from local vendors, live entertainment, silent basket auctions and 50-50 raffle. Cockeye BBQ, Primanti Bros. in Niles and Tommy’s Brothers Pizza will be on hand with menu items available for purchase along with a cash bar.
Master of ceremonies for the event will be state Rep. Michael O’Brien of Warren, D-64th.

Fall Civil War tour for history buffs

The Mahoning Valley Civil War Roundtable is taking reservations for a carpooling trip to Harper’s Ferry, Hill’s Assault at Antietam and Shepherdstown from Friday to next Sunday. The tour provides a detailed look at “Stonewall” Jackson’s role in the 1862 Maryland Campaign.
Sites will include the siege and battle of Harper’s Ferry, a focus on A.P. Hill’s march and attack at Antietam and an exclusive visit to the Shepherdstown Battlefield, the last battle of the Maryland Campaign. The tour will also include a special anniversary tour of Ball’s Bluff battlefield in Leesburg, Va.
Hotel accommodations are available at the Best Western Historic Frederick, 420 Prospect Blvd., Frederick, Md. Call 301-695-6200 and mention “Mahoning Valley Civil War Roundtable” for the group rate. The guides will begin the tour at the hotel. Attendees will drive their own vehicles to the different sites.
The cost of the tour is $55. This fee is for three professional guides who will lead the tours. One guide is a full-time ranger at Gettysburg NMP, and another is a seasonal tour guide there. The third guide is the Historic Site operations supervisor for Prince William County, VA-owned historic sites.
