Local newcomers group to meet
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on Oct. 25 at Caf Augustine in the Newport library at, located at 3730 Market Street. There will be a select menu and hostesses are Pat Marshall and Jean Callahan. The program will be a talk by Traci Manning of the Ohio Historical Society. She will speak on clothing styles in the past of Mahoning County. The social gathering is at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Yoga at the library

Historical society to meet on Oct. 17
The Poland Historical Society will meet on Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224) in Poland Township. Following the meeting, at 7:30 p.m. Larry Baughman, President; Laurie Fox, Vice-President, and Dave Smith, Secretary, will present a brief history about Poland Center dating back to 1798 when the first lots in the township were sold to John Struthers. The Center of Poland Township begins at the intersection of Center Road and Struthers Road, where the Schoolhouse is located. The presentation will be about people and places within a one mile of the center. A panel of several long-time residents will talk about their memories growing up in Poland Center, as well as relating stories they’ve heard from their parents and grandparents over the years. The public is invited to join the discussion and share their own memories and stories of Poland Center. Cardinal Mooney Minority Alumni Council announces reunion weekend
The CMHS Minority Alumni Council recently announced the inaugural MAC All-Class Reunion, which will take place throughout the weekend of Oct. 20-22. The MAC invites all Cardinal Mooney alumni to join in the three-day celebration, which will feature a variety of activities and opportunities to visit with old friends, meet new ones and reconnect with the Mooney Family. All funds raised during the reunion weekend will be used by the MAC’s Scholarship Fund, which directly benefits deserving CMHS students by providing money for athletic and academic fees, tuition assistance, college textbooks and more. The weekend will kick off on Oct. 20 with a casual tailgating event leading up to the Mooney versus Ursuline homecoming game. On Oct. 21, reunion attendees are invited to visit CMHS early in the day for tours. In the evening, alumni will join together at the MAC Scholarship Gala to socialize and network while enjoying upscale dining, cocktails and dancing. On Oct. 22, the weekend will close with the Minority Alumni Council’s Annual Meeting and a Farewell Brunch. Tickets are available now, and can be purchased by visiting CMHSMinorityAlumni.com/Events. Local seniors group to meet
The Holy Family Seniors Group will not meet on its regular day in October. The October meeting has been rescheduled for Oct. 23. The meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip
The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Oct. 16
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on Oct. 16, from 6-8 p.m. in the Small Meeting Room at the Canfield Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left Of Center And Other Stories,” “The Gifts of Change” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ Christie will also be discussing plans for the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day event in December. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims
Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.
Make a folded-book pumpkin
Meet at the Poland library on Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. for a fun introduction to recycled book projects. Transform a book into a pumpkin to take home. All materials will be provided. This event is for adults and teens.
Snack-N-Sign at the library
Students in grades five through eight: go to the Poland library on Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m. to learn sign language and learn about Deaf culture through fun, interactive games and activities. A snack will be provided. This program is for fifth- through eight-graders only.
Decorate a pumpkin to win
The Pumpkin Palooza decorating contest will take place at the Poland library on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. The library will supply pumpkins, paint and decorations; you are also welcome to bring any decorating items you need. Decorated pumpkins will be displayed for voting, and the creator of the winning pumpkin will receive a gift card. This event is for tweens and teens, in grades 5-12. Friendly Squares have have Halloween dance on Oct. 14
The Friendly Squares will host its monthly square dance on Oct. 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Quarter auction presented to benefit local charities
The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its second Quarter Auction on Oct. 21 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. Get a look into hoarding disorder
Molly Suehr and Rachel Cline, trained under the direction of Cory Chalmers, host of A&E’s “Hoarders” television show, will help us to understand hoarding disorder. The presentation will provide a definition, an idea of the prevalence of hoarders, the varying levels of hoarding and the differing hording types. What type of person hoards? You may be surprised. Bond with babies and books
Join the library for Baby Brilliant every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. The program is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Prepare for kindergarten through play
Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for children who are ages 2-6 years-old. It will take place on Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library.
Learn the history of cinema with urban explorer

Solve an enchanted murder mystery at the library
This mystery event at the Poland library on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. will be performed for teens, by teens. Murder in the Library: Once Upon a Murder - Once upon a time, there was a faraway land called the Enchanted Realm, whose people got along harmoniously for many centuries...until Queen Black gained control. It was not long before happy endings turned into nightmares. Queen Black has invited all of the territories to the Dark Castle to sign a peace treaty and she may have evil intentions. Nonetheless, you must solve the murder before the killer strikes again. Listen carefully to the suspects, study the crime scene and watch for any unusual circumstances. Only the sleuth with the most correct answers will win the prize. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for teens only. Historical society to have bus trip Nov 15
The Society has announced plans for a fundraiser bus trip to Cambridge, Ohio to visit Charles Dickens Village on Nov. 15. The bus departs from Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road (State Route 224) at 8:30 a.m. and arrives in Cambridge at 11 a.m. The day’s schedule includes a guided tour of the Dickens Historical Village mannequins; Kennedy’s Bakery; Guernsey County Historical Society; lunch on your own at Theo’s, a home-cooking style restaurant; downtown shopping in unique shops; Cambridge Glass Museum and Dickens Courthouse Light Show. The bus departs for home at 6 p.m. The cost is $85 per person and includes bus and all admissions, lunch not included. Proceeds will benefit the efforts of the Poland Historical Society in preserving the history of Poland. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
