Canfield Presbyterian Church to host Trunk or Treat
There will be a free to the public Trunk or Treat event at Canfield Presbyterian Church on Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m., including Biblical carnival games, dinner and trick-or-treating from car to car in the church parking lot. Cardinal Mooney High School Minority Alumni Council announces reunion weekend
The CMHS Minority Alumni Council recently announced the inaugural MAC All-Class Reunion, which will take place throughout the weekend of Oct. 20-22. The MAC invites all Cardinal Mooney alumni to join in the three-day celebration, which will feature a variety of activities and opportunities to visit with old friends, meet new ones and reconnect with the Mooney Family. All funds raised during the reunion weekend will be used by the MAC’s Scholarship Fund, which directly benefits deserving CMHS students by providing money for athletic and academic fees, tuition assistance, college textbooks and more. The weekend will kick off on Oct. 20 with a casual tailgating event leading up to the Mooney versus Ursuline homecoming game. On Oct. 21, reunion attendees are invited to visit CMHS early in the day for tours. In the evening, alumni will join together at the MAC Scholarship Gala to socialize and network while enjoying upscale dining, cocktails and dancing. On Oct. 22, the weekend will close with the Minority Alumni Council’s Annual Meeting and a Farewell Brunch. Tickets are available now, and can be purchased by visiting CMHSMinorityAlumni.com/Events. Learn about nocturnal animals at the library
Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Creatures of the Night” at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Canfield library. Mike Johnson, Chief of Natural and Cultural Resource Management at Summit Metro Parks, will present an overview of three wildlife programs that focus on some of the region’s nocturnal animals – bats, owls and coyotes. Learn about some of their unique finds and the many challenges this group of animals faces, including how coyotes are studied and how coyotes study you.
Local newcomers group to meet
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on Oct. 25 at Caf Augustine in the Newport library at, located at 3730 Market Street. There will be a select menu and hostesses are Pat Marshall and Jean Callahan. The program will be a talk by Traci Manning of the Ohio Historical Society. She will speak on clothing styles in the past of Mahoning County. The social gathering is at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. TQGIBT to create no-sew Christmas ornaments
The October meeting of TQGIBT – That Quilt Group I Belong To – will take place on Oct. 17 at the Rotary Building at Fair Park in Canfield. Co-President Karen Miles will lead the group in creating no-sew Christmas ornaments. Participants should bring 3 inch Styrofoam balls, straight pins and 43 21‚Ñ2 inch squares of Christmas fabric. Bringing a ribbon for hanging the ornaments is also encouraged. Miles insists this is a very relaxing project and should only take an hour for each ornament. There will also be early sewing at 1 p.m. for anyone interested. TQGIBT meets at Fair Park in Canfield on the third Tuesday of each month, with some exceptions, and is open to all quilters in the Mahoning Valley, at all skill levels. Historical program to be at the library
The Friends of PLYMC Canfield Committee will host this fundraising tea with a performance by the Salem Historical Society, titled “Christmas at the White House with the First Ladies.” The event will take place on Nov. 5 at the Canfield library at 1 p.m. Tea and tea food will be prepared so bring your favorite tea cup. Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip
The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Friendly Squares have have Halloween dance on Oct. 14
The Friendly Squares will host its monthly square dance on Oct. 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Oct. 16
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on Oct. 16, from 6-8 p.m. in the Small Meeting Room at the Canfield Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left Of Center And Other Stories,” “The Gifts of Change” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ Christie will also be discussing plans for the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day event in December. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims
Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. Join the Canfield library for a Saturday Movie Matinee on Oct. 28 at 2:30 p.m. A movie-themed snack will be served, however feel free to bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7-years and younger must be with an adult. The movie will be a Halloween-themed DVD, rated PG.
Relax, get creative and color
Join the Canfield library on Oct. 16 from 10-11:15 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.
Library hosts annual memorial contest
The ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest is running from Oct. 1-31 this year. Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who lost her battle to cancer. The libraries are sponsoring the ninth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six-word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life—some part of it or all of it—told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
Decorate a Pumpkin
Join the Canfield library on Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m. to create your own Jack-o-Lantern. The library will provide pumpkins, paint, jewels and other pretty/spooky stuff with which to decorate. Drop in to play Mah-Jongg with others who love the game every Monday in October from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets will not be provided. This game night is for adults.

Quarter auction presented to benefit local charities
The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its second Quarter Auction on Oct. 21 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bidding starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and the proceeds will benefit local charities. Chips, popcorn, water and soda will be available for purchase. Bond with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for babies and will take place at the Canfield library every Thursday in October at 10 a.m.

Go to any PLYMC library to color a picture and enter a drawing to win four tickets (a family pack) to the 5 p.m. on Oct. 29 performance of Disney Live’s “Mickey & Minnie’s Doorway to Magic.” The contest runs from Oct. 2-19. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
