NED teaches students to be nice

YOUNGSTOWN
A character education program helped educators at Martin Luther King Elementary show students how to be their best every day.
Students erupted with cheers as Chad Adams, yo-yo aficionado, told stories about himself and the star character Ned at The NED Program – Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best – Wednesday afternoon.
The program, said school counselor Kristen Campana, helps students build their own characters in a positive light.
“It helps instill good traits in our students as early as possible so they can all grow and be successful in all aspects,” she said.
The show, Campana added, helps students pick up on the kind of behaviors educators wish to see students display daily.
The NED Program performs at nearly 5,500 schools in front of nearly 2.5 million students worldwide, according to thenedshow.com.
Despite the show’s curriculum maintaining a kindergarten-through-fourth-grade focus, Campana invited all students to see the show, saying everyone could use a NED talk.
Fifth-grader Trent Young said showing students how to be nice is important in ridding the school of bullying.
“People need to start being nice,” Trent said. “We are all the same here.”
John Barden, third-grader, echoed Trent’s sentiment about being nice.
“You should show younger kids to be nice so that when they’re our age, they’ll continue to show kids younger than them to be kind,” John said.
