Phantoms’ Gresock commits to Merrimack

Youngstown Phantoms forward Chase Gresock has announced his commitment to play for Merrimack College.

The 6-foot-0, 195-pound right winger hails from Powell and joined the Phantoms last season for his senior year of high school.

Gresock played 52 games last season and and scored 12 goals. He had 16 points to go along with 51 penalty minutes in his rookie year.

“I’m excited about this wonderful opportunity to not only strive academically and to also compete in arguably the best conference in college hockey,” Gresock said. “I feel my time in Youngstown has prepared me to compete at the next level, because of the hard work and the coaching staff.

“I chose Merrimack because it’s a great fit for me and I feel that my talent and abilities will have the biggest impact there.”

Curtis Carr, the Phantoms head coach in 2010-11, is an associate head coahc at Merrimack.

Gresock was drafted by the Phantoms in the May 2015 Phase II USHL Draft where he was the club’s 13th round selection (211th overall).

Prior to his USHL career, Gresock had played U16 and U18 AAA hockey in Columbus for the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets.

“The Phantoms’ organization is proud for Chase,” Phantoms General Manager Jason Koehler said. “Chase is a great story as an Ohio born and developed player and very good athlete who excelled in baseball and hockey before placing his full focus on hockey the last two years.

“In our eyes, he has the ability to continue to grow as a player and improve greatly the next few seasons as a power forward and I believe the staff at Merrimack saw that and jumped at the right time,” Koehler said. “Chase is a solid mix of heavy hitting and a goal scorer that should keep the fans, staff, and his teammates happy.”

Former Phantoms Dominic Dockery, Tyler Drevitch, Alex Carle, Jonathan Kovacevic, Patrick Kramer, Alfred Larsson, Laine McKay and Ludvig Larsson are attending Merrimack College which is located in North Andover, Mass.

Merrimack plays in the Hockey East Conference.
