YSU Press Day
YOUNGSTOWN
More than 300 high school students and advisers from more than 20 schools are expected to attend the 79th annual Press Day at Youngstown State University from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in Kilcawley Center.
The event’s goal is to provide support and help improve journalism and publications (including yearbooks, newspapers and online news websites) in Mahoning Valley high schools. More than 25 journalists, media professionals and educators from across Northeast Ohio, along with about 30 student journalists from YSU, will make presentations.
There also will be equal attention given to design, photography and video production.
Advisers who are still interested in attending with their students should contact Dave Davis for a registration form at ddavis03@ysu.edu. The cost is $5 per person.
New Navarro members
YOUNGSTOWN
Five Youngstown State University freshmen are the newest members of the Navarro Executive Fellows program.
The program, offered for the first time last fall and designed for minority students, is named in honor of philanthropists Shorty and Elba Navarro, who donated $1 million to fund scholarships and campus jobs for students.
The fellows spend up to 15 hours a week with a member of senior campus leadership. The mentors provide insight and networking as well as help the students set goals and stay on track academically, professionally and personally.
The newest members are Tylen Chatman of Youngstown, Kenneth Donaldson of Youngstown, Miranda Olenik of Mineral Ridge, Nylauna Petty of Beachwood and Rina Raib of Youngstown.
Driving simulator
YOUNGSTOWN
A simulator designed to raise awareness of the perils of distracted driving has been donated to Youngstown State University by the Maria Tiberi Foundation.
YSU Police Chief Shawn Varso said the campus police department will partner with other campus divisions and groups to use the simulator for distracted driving/impaired driving education.
The foundation is named in memory of Maria, who was a senior graphic designs major at Ohio State University when she died in an auto accident in September 2013. The foundation, created by her parents, Dom and Terri Tiberi, brings distraction-free driving to the forefront.
