Warren police detectives are investigating the shooting death Saturday of Michael Blackwell, 37, in the area of Rogers and Beck streets in a housing complex. No other information about the victim was provided.

In a brief news release, police said they responded to reports of shots being fired in the area about 3:43 a.m. and found the victim dead at the scene. Police reported later Saturday that no suspects were in custody. According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, witnesses said the victim was shot several times and that someone they believed to be a suspect drove away in a dark blue truck.

Annexation meeting

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning County commissioners will have a special meeting at 8 a.m. Tuesday to vote on the annexation of 18.83 acres in Canfield Township.

The annexation was the subject of a lawsuit filed last week by Frank Amedia, who claims the commissioners have failed to rule on the annexation in a timely manner and asked a judge to compel their action.

A hearing on Amedia’s lawsuit is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday before Magistrate Timothy G. Welsh in common pleas court.

Amedia has plans to develop the acreage under consideration for annexation. Annexation would allow the city of Canfield to provide water and sewer lines.

Author to speak

NORTH LIMA

Julia Cook, a former educator, school counselor and children’s author, will visit students and staff at South Range Elementary on Monday.

Cook will speak with kindergartners through second-graders at 9 a.m., third- and fourth-graders at noon and teachers at 3 p.m.

Among her many awards, Cook has received the Association for Educational Publishers Distinguished Achievement Award, and her books have been honored by The National Parenting Center and Mom’s Choice Awards.

Chili cook-off

VIENNA

The Vienna Township Neighborhood Watch will host a Chili Cook Off from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Vienna Fire Station, 833 Youngstown-Kingsville Road.

Donation of $5 includes chili and a hot dog. Chili entries and dessert donations are due by 2 p.m. Desserts are available for $1. Chili judging begins at 3:30. There will be a basket and 50-50 raffle.

Baker verdict

YOUNGSTOWN

A jury found Nahdia Baker, 30, of Stone Mountain, Ga., not guilty of attempted murder but could not decide Friday night on other charges.

Prosecutors had alleged she was involved with an East Side drug ring responsible for several murders. Five others involved in the ring have been convicted and are serving lengthy prison sentences. The jury could not reach a verdict on other charges including engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.
