Quakers are not only in history books

In social studies class , students read about Quakers who settled Pennsylvania. Quakers worked for public education and prison reform. Quakers were part of the Underground Railroad. Then somehow, Quakers disappear from the history books. Did Quakers disappear altogether?
Nelda Hawkins, a local Quaker historian, wants people to know that Quakers have been in the Salem area for more than 200 years and remain today.
Salem and Middleton Friends Public meetings and open houses will take place Friday and Saturday. A member will give a short explanation of the practice, and the public will have a chance to experience a traditional meeting for worship.
Middleton Friends Meeting, 44866 Crestview Road, Columbiana, will host an open house at 7 p.m. Friday. Salem Friends Meeting, 338 Sixth St., will have a meeting at 4 p.m. Saturday. Visitors are welcome.
